First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at SunPower.
Senior Associate
The interview process was pretty straightforward and easy, but it did take over three months to finally get the job offer. This was before the company went bankrupt. There were 4 rounds of interviews, with the final one being with the CFO.
- Asked to close a financial model
Software Development Engineer
This was the most unprofessional technical interview I’ve ever experienced. The interviewer was unprepared and very rude. I was told “you don’t have to code, you can just talk through how you would solve the problem”. After three minutes of doing just that, I was told “you know we’re judging you on your code right?” From that point on I couldn’t think for longer than a minute without unhelpful and distracting input. To top it all off, the interviewer cut the interview 30 minutes short without explanation.
- A typical random Leetcode coding exercise was given.
Project Coordinator
Applied and got contacted by a recruiter within 3 days. First was a phone screen, then a 24-hour take-home assignment with 2 scenarios: email a customer about project progress and how to handle a procedural/management issue, plus a writing prompt on career aspirations at SunPower. Passed that and interviewed with 3 Project Coordinator supervisors. They introduced themselves, I introduced myself, and then they asked questions, mostly situational, and I got to ask questions. I dressed up but they were very casually dressed, which was odd. The interview panel seemed disengaged and lacked energy. One interviewer had her hand covering her mouth the whole time. After two of them finished, they went quiet, leaving me with one interviewer to finish. It felt stagnant, like a Q&A with no real conversation about the role or my potential contributions. My impression is the supervisors lacked hiring experience.
- What are your strengths and weaknesses?
- If you had to complete a project with very little information, how would you proceed?
- If the project manager promised a client that we would pay to get them a new roof but the client later finds out that isn't the case, how do you proceed?
Program Manager
A recruiter reached out within days of my application and scheduled a hiring manager interview for the next week. The first interview was about my background and the role, with questions on my fit. It was not heavy on behavioral or situational questions. I was told a second interview would be set up with another manager. The second interview was with a senior manager I'd work closely with. This one was more casual, focused on team fit. The hiring manager kept me updated over the next few weeks as a decision was made, and then called to offer me the job. It was a good interview experience.
- Can you explain why you're a strong candidate for this position?
- Could you outline your approach to Program Management for the specified work?
