First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Southern Illinois University.
IT Support Assistant
First, there was a 60-minute screening with a committee where they asked both technical and behavioral questions about Microsoft tools and ticketing systems. The next step is an in-person interview that happens almost a month later, to see how well I fit into the university environment.
- Tell me about your experience with Active Directory.
- Can you describe your knowledge of Microsoft Excel?
- What are your skills with Microsoft Access?
Early Childhood Educator
It was a very informative interview where they asked great questions in a private office. I felt welcomed and comfortable. Some questions were personal but relevant to working with kids. They offered me the position right after the interview.
- Can you describe your childcare style?
- Tell me about your experience.
- What unique contributions would you make to our team?
Network Security Engineer
The interview was a virtual meeting with some questions around 2019. I only had one interview and the questions were definitely geared towards IT, so preparing with that in mind is important. Possibly changed now that Covid restrictions have loosened.
- Can you explain UDP versus TCP?
- What is your experience with Linux?
- Tell me about your personal interests or about yourself.
Student Worker
The interview was brief and mostly concentrated on customer service abilities. The questions were simple to answer if you had a positive outlook. I received an initial call for a longer discussion, followed by an in-person meeting for another shorter interview. The inquiries were quite general, suitable for any customer service or retail position.
- Tell me about a time you dealt with a difficult customer.
