The interview involved broad questions demanding very specific answers about financial instruments, corporate business products, the distinction between bonds and equities, SQL (specifically 'window' functions), data aggregation and analytics, and data lakes versus data warehouses. It seemed like they expected extensive experience to answer these, and even when I admitted unfamiliarity, I was probed further on the same topics. Despite the technical nature of the questions, the role's responsibilities and project details were unclear, which was disappointing. The interviewer's demeanor was unpleasant; it felt less like an interview and more like an attempt to highlight my lack of knowledge. While they did offer explanations for unknown answers, their delivery felt boastful and ego-driven.

I had 6 interviews, each about 30 minutes long. I spoke with 6 different people. They asked me to introduce myself and explain my interest in SMBC. I went over my resume and discussed my past experiences, then guided the conversation to highlight why I would be a good fit for the role. There were no technical questions, but we discussed markets, news, and global affairs. About 4 out of the 6 interviewers indicated I should hear from them soon, but it's been over a week since the Superday and I haven't received a callback, so I likely won't get an offer. It's a really tough feeling when you're in a Superday or final round interview and feel super confident about your performance and conversations, but you're still waiting for feedback. You feel like you couldn't have done anything differently, yet you're still in limbo.

Behavioral Technical Presentation

The SMBC Superday was mostly behavioral with some market focus, and hardly any technical questions. The interviewers were chill and conversational, more focused on fit, how you communicate, and your general market awareness rather than strict financial modeling or valuation. They wanted to see if you got what's going on in the markets, how macro trends impact debt issuance, and if you could act like a teammate in a client-facing role.

Before interviewing with the deputy head, everything was fine. However, that was the most condescending, arrogant, and rude interview experience I ever had. He's smart but needs to learn to respect people. The interview lasted 30 minutes, and he arrived 15 minutes late without turning on his camera. He asked me what Value at Risk is, and I defined it as the 'maximum loss'. He corrected me, saying it's 'no more than', and then declared I know nothing about it and don't even understand my resume.

  • Could you explain what Value at Risk is?
