Technical

The interview involved broad questions demanding very specific answers about financial instruments, corporate business products, the distinction between bonds and equities, SQL (specifically 'window' functions), data aggregation and analytics, and data lakes versus data warehouses. It seemed like they expected extensive experience to answer these, and even when I admitted unfamiliarity, I was probed further on the same topics. Despite the technical nature of the questions, the role's responsibilities and project details were unclear, which was disappointing. The interviewer's demeanor was unpleasant; it felt less like an interview and more like an attempt to highlight my lack of knowledge. While they did offer explanations for unknown answers, their delivery felt boastful and ego-driven.

Behavioral Technical

So, the interview started with a 30-minute video chat with HR. They wanted to know about my background, check out my resume, and see why I'm interested in this role. It was mostly behavioral stuff, like 'Why SMBC?', 'Why project finance?', and 'Walk me through your resume.'. After that, I moved on to two rounds with the Project Finance team. The first was a 30-minute technical interview with an Associate. They asked about building a basic project finance model, what DSCR is and how it's used for debt sizing, and how to structure renewable energy deals versus transportation projects.
