Behavioral Other

There were 3 interviews scheduled about 1-2 weeks apart. The first one involved submitting answers to questions without an interviewer present. Everyone was really nice and direct, and the whole process felt very organized.

First interview was through Willow, you had to record yourself answering questions within 48 hours. It was pretty straightforward and the questions were typical screening ones. The second interview was on Webex and lasted about 1.5 hours, even though it was scheduled for that long. I had to submit 7 references beforehand. It was a really nice experience, the two interviewers were friendly and took time to chat and answer my questions. The questions they asked were relevant, and I left feeling pretty good about it. The third interview was also on Webex, even though I live close to HQ. It was supposed to be 30 minutes with two people from a higher level. They started by saying it wouldn't even take the full 30 minutes because they had more important things to do. Their tone was rushed and uninterested. I had done some research and talked to someone who worked there, and apparently, their experience was totally different from mine. They rushed through their company intro and then rapid-fired me with complex questions about conflict resolution and personal situations. It felt like they were just going through the motions, and it really threw me off. I didn't feel great after this last interview and knew I could have answered better, but it didn't seem like they cared. I wasn't surprised when I got rejected about a week and a half later. They had listed a start date of June 16th on the job posting, but asked if I could start on June 2nd during both the 2nd and 3rd interviews. I said I couldn't because I had already planned a vacation. They seemed okay with it in the second interview, but then they brought it up again in the third interview. When I mentioned it was already noted, one of them made a rude comment about having lots of notes. They also asked for 7 references, and people I know who did it said the questions were more involved and took longer than the 5-10 minutes they were told. They told me to use SmartRecruiters for any questions, but I couldn't find a way to contact a person there. I sent an email to a generic address but never heard back.

About a week after I applied, I got an email to do a technical exam. I had 4 days to submit it, and 48 hours to work on it once I started. It had 3 questions, 2 LC-style and 1 SQL, and took about an hour. The day after I sent it back, they emailed to set up an interview. It was a bummer because the soonest I could schedule it was two weeks out, so I had to wait a long time, but oh well. The interview was split evenly between behavioral and technical stuff. Mostly typical behavioral questions, and for the technical part, they went over my exam answers, asked some questions about my language experience and understanding code, and had me share my screen to write a little function in an editor or IDE. The whole thing lasted a bit over an hour. They said I'd hear back in two weeks and that any second interview, with the VP of programming and a Lead Engineer, would be more about personality and soft skills. They assured me the technical part was done. I didn't get a second interview and they didn't tell me why.

  • Tell me about a situation where you assisted someone without a technical background with a technical issue. How did you ensure they understood the problem and its solution?
  • How would you approach explaining a technical problem to a non-technical person and guiding them to a resolution?

Applied online, then waited almost four weeks for a recruiter call. Next, I had a phone screen with the VP of customer service operations. Then, after another couple of weeks with no word, I got an email to schedule a face-to-face with the branch manager. Finally, HR contacted me again after two or three weeks for a final phone interview with the CEO. It was weird because the CEO asked the exact same questions in the same order as the previous interviews.
