Sales
The interview was near Port Authority on the 5th floor. There were about 8-15 people waiting when I arrived. They called me in first. I met with a woman who asked basic questions about my background and why I was interested in sales. She spoke quickly and I didn't really get a clear understanding of what they sell. I understood it was face-to-face sales. I thought it was a base salary position, but she clarified it's commission-only. The people seemed okay, but I had a weird feeling about the place. They wanted me to come back for a second interview to shadow for a day. I read online that this is a scam where they get free labor, but I don't know if it's true. I decided not to go because I want a base salary. I think reputable companies offer base pay, and commission-only isn't appealing in New York with student loans.
- Can you share an experience of working in a group? What difficulties did you face, and how did you handle them?
Marketing and Sales Representative
The lobby was packed when I arrived for my interview, indicating they were interviewing many candidates. I met with the Hiring Director, Lauren, for about 20 minutes. We briefly discussed my qualifications, and she mentioned they would contact me later that day for a second interview if I was selected. The second interview involved a field shadow with a Team Leader. I wasn't prepared for being outdoors and wore inappropriate shoes due to the weather. My initial thought was that it would be a difficult day, possibly involving door-to-door sales, but I decided to approach it with an open mind. I'm glad I did because the customers we met, who were clients of Quill, were very pleasant. Even if they didn't sign up, my trainer was skilled at building rapport with them. It was inspiring to see someone who had only been with Quill for two months earn $300 in a single day. I genuinely enjoyed the experience and became eager to receive an offer. I felt quite confident in my ability to succeed. The third interview was stressful because it was unclear if an offer would be extended. Despite my self-assurance, the HR team appeared less convinced.
- Given that we see many well-qualified and polished candidates, what distinguishes you from the rest?
Account Manager
It started with a quick 15-20 minute chat with a hiring director. The place was packed, they were hiring for lots of roles. I spoke with someone hiring for the Staples B2B client account. We talked a bit about my background, leadership skills, and future plans. I was told I'd hear back that evening if I made it to the next round. I did get called back for a full day second interview the next day. Before that, I did some research on Glassdoor and saw mixed reviews, some people loved it, others didn't realize it was primarily a sales role. My interviewer was upfront about it being a sales-focused Account Management position, which is what I wanted, so I went for it. It turned out to be a great experience, and I got a clear picture of how the Quill program operates. I can see how it might not be for everyone, and how someone could have a bad experience if they don't listen. The team lead I met with for the second interview mentioned they're looking to build up their management team long-term, which is appealing since I'm looking for growth opportunities I didn't have before. Excited to see how this develops.
- Tell me about a team you were on, what was your part, and how did it affect the outcome?
- What qualities would you look for in a business partner?
- What's your go-to skill set for surviving the zombie apocalypse?
Sales Marketing and Brand Advertising
You start with a quick call to review your resume and see if it's a good fit, checking what you're looking for and what they need. If you seem confident, they'll call you back the same day for a full day of activities. This day involves going out in the field with a salesperson. You'll face some really basic questions to gauge your general knowledge, as they accept applicants from all sorts of educational backgrounds, even those without formal education. You'll be doing door-to-door sales for a big company's product, working with some well-known names. By the end of the day, there's a small test, followed by a final meeting with management to discuss details like salary.
- Imagine you're the VP of Marketing for a company that sells office supplies. What would be your very first action?
