Account Manager
It started with a quick 15-20 minute chat with a hiring director. The place was packed, they were hiring for lots of roles. I spoke with someone hiring for the Staples B2B client account. We talked a bit about my background, leadership skills, and future plans. I was told I'd hear back that evening if I made it to the next round. I did get called back for a full day second interview the next day. Before that, I did some research on Glassdoor and saw mixed reviews, some people loved it, others didn't realize it was primarily a sales role. My interviewer was upfront about it being a sales-focused Account Management position, which is what I wanted, so I went for it. It turned out to be a great experience, and I got a clear picture of how the Quill program operates. I can see how it might not be for everyone, and how someone could have a bad experience if they don't listen. The team lead I met with for the second interview mentioned they're looking to build up their management team long-term, which is appealing since I'm looking for growth opportunities I didn't have before. Excited to see how this develops.
- Tell me about a team you were on, what was your part, and how did it affect the outcome?
- What qualities would you look for in a business partner?
- What's your go-to skill set for surviving the zombie apocalypse?
Account Manager
The first interview was a quick, high-volume screening call with an aggressive HR rep pushing for an in-person. The interviewer, however, was professional. The second interview involved shadowing two employees for a full day. The job was advertised as marketing, but it's really just a direct sales role. If you're looking to get into sales, this might be the place. The shadowing involved going door-to-door pitching to small businesses in Queens for their client, Quill Office Supplies. During this second interview, they were cagey about compensation, which I found odd. It seems like they only have door-to-door sales positions, no management roles. Based on what I saw, the pay is likely commission-only. Most of the staff appear to be in their early to late 20s. The company also didn't cover my travel or food, which felt a bit thoughtless given I traveled all the way to Elmhurst, Queens for this sales pitch.
- Can you tell me a bit about yourself?
- What activities do you enjoy outside of work?
Account Manager
I found the job online and then I got a call back pretty quickly. On the day of the interview, I brought my resume. When I got to their office, I had to wait a bit. Then, I went in for an interview where they asked me what I thought I could bring to the team, and also about my past jobs and what I was qualified for. They called me for another round, but I decided to pass on it.
- Were you ever in charge of a large group of people?
