The interview process involved a take-home project. The baseline expectation was to scrape a site to determine the sequential order of posts on a page. However, they were expecting candidates to spend hours adding advanced features and going beyond basic requirements without compensation. It was frustrating because I wasn't sure if they even reviewed the Loom video I uploaded, which I had to pay for to edit clips. It felt like they were nitpicking extra credit points on a project I did for free, instead of being appreciative. Candidates with more free time could complete those extra parts, but it didn't really assess core competency, just who would sell themselves out the most. I have other paid duties, so I can't spend hours on unpaid assignments.

I was contacted by a recruiter, then had a call with them. After that, I was given a take-home assignment and had to do a mock customer presentation. The process wrapped up with a culture call, also with the recruiter. It was a good interview experience overall, though it was tough not to get the offer after all the effort. The recruiter did give me a $100 gift card to say thanks for my work, which was nice.

I was asked to do a coding challenge using Playwright. The task was to scrape and sort 100 articles from newest to oldest. After that, I had to make a 2-minute video using Loom where I answered why I want to work at QA Wolf and did a code walkthrough. I completed the coding challenge, made the video, and even put in a current employee's name for a referral. The next day, I got a generic rejection email saying I did a 'great job' but other candidates were a 'better match,' with no further details. Based on the Loom view count, it seems like my video wasn't even watched. I don't feel my time was respected.

I applied online and then had a phone screen the following week. The phone screen itself was pretty average, nothing particularly special. It was a bit concerning that they seemed unsure about their own interview process. I don't think they ever ended up hiring for the role because it's still advertised four months later. Either they never really intended to hire anyone, or they're stuck in a loop of indecision, as it's hard to believe they couldn't find a suitable candidate in this job market. After looking closer at the position and the company's current standing, it seems like any marketing-related roles might be set up for failure. For a company only two years out of stealth mode, I would have expected more signs of growth. I noticed they're hiring for more marketing positions, which appears to be a costly move without a clear strategy. Spending a lot on paid ads without generating much organic interest probably won't end well for them. The company seems to have good intentions, but it feels like a ship without a rudder. Inexperienced leadership might ultimately be the company's undoing. I'd strongly advise caution if you're considering interviewing with them.
