The interview process involved a take-home project. The baseline expectation was to scrape a site to determine the sequential order of posts on a page. However, they were expecting candidates to spend hours adding advanced features and going beyond basic requirements without compensation. It was frustrating because I wasn't sure if they even reviewed the Loom video I uploaded, which I had to pay for to edit clips. It felt like they were nitpicking extra credit points on a project I did for free, instead of being appreciative. Candidates with more free time could complete those extra parts, but it didn't really assess core competency, just who would sell themselves out the most. I have other paid duties, so I can't spend hours on unpaid assignments.

The interview process is really straightforward and pretty progressive. You'll do a take-home assessment, then an "on-site interview" which is actually all online, followed by a chat with a director. Both the take-home and the online "on-site" are super practical and show you what the job is like day-to-day. They even paid me $150 for my time after the "on-site". Just focus on edge cases and follow Playwright's best practices, and you'll do great!

QA Wolf emailed me about an at-home test to gauge my engineering abilities. The instructions were to solve the given problem and then record a Loom video explaining my motivations for joining their company and detailing how my solution works. Despite my code being robust and exceeding the minimum requirements, my application was rejected the following day. They mentioned they would watch the Loom video, but the statistics from Look indicate this didn't happen, and other reviewers have shared similar experiences. It feels dishonest to state what they're looking for and how they'll evaluate the work, only to disregard it and clearly expect much more from participants. My advice to QA Wolf: a competent Software Engineer knows when a simpler solution is preferable! There's no need to over-engineer a solution, as it only demonstrates poor resource and time management. In a team setting, overly complex code also hinders everyone else's progress. I'm frustrated that my perspective wasn't considered by any of them.
