First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Origin Energy.
Software Engineer
The process started with a recruiter call, followed by a meeting with the head developer. I was under the impression it would be a brief chat, but it turned out to be a full interview, which wasn't communicated beforehand. The head developer was quite rude and dismissive throughout the conversation.
- Could you write a program that determines the area of a square, given the coordinates for its top-left and bottom-right corners?
Financial Analyst
The interview process at Origin Energy was quite long from application to the final interview, which I thought was transparent because I had a dedicated recruiter in Melbourne. There were 3 interviews with 4 people total – 3 women and 1 man, consisting of HR and reporting managers. After the final interview, I spoke with the recruiter on the phone about salary. I made the mistake of mentioning I was 2 months pregnant, explaining it wasn't the case when I applied. After a long silence, and me pushing for an update, I was told the job went to someone else. They also mentioned I wouldn't be eligible for maternity leave as I wouldn't have completed a year of service. Initially, I accepted this, but later found an amazing contract role at a major bank that was aware of my situation. Looking back 9 years later, and seeing how senior roles are now viewed, I feel let down by how Origin Energy handled it, even though they cited 'another candidate'. I'm sure they will stick to that reason, but it doesn't feel right given the interviews went well. I hope this feedback helps improve things for women at the company.
- Tell me about challenges you've encountered.
- How have you encouraged curiosity in your work?
Brand Design Lead
It was a straightforward process. I started with a screening call with the talent team, and then had two video interviews. The first video interview was with the hiring manager and the person I would be replacing. The second call was with a senior colleague from a parallel business area, plus an external consultant. The team was professional and friendly, and I felt optimistic after each call. I'm confident it would be a great place to work.
- Can you describe what constitutes excellent Brand Strategy?
Energy Specialist
I applied online and shortly after got a call from a pleasant lady. I didn't realize it was an interview at first, as I was out and about, so it was a very relaxed phone interview with a few questions. It was quite chill, and then she referred me for a second interview via Zoom. This time, I met two nice people, and it was very casual. It was a 'behavioural interview,' which I had to look up. I was quite nervous for this one and did some research beforehand, preparing examples of how I've gone above and beyond for customer service. There were about 10 questions, lasting around 45-50 minutes, and I also got to ask some questions. My recruitment manager called soon after to offer me the job. My advice is to do your homework, don't stress, and be confident.
- Using the STAR approach, tell me about yourself, your skills, and your experience.
- Can you provide an example of a time you went above and beyond to deliver excellent customer service?
- Describe a situation where you realized you made a mistake and explain what you learned from it.
