A brand manager reached out after I applied online and scheduled a 30-minute chat. We talked the next day about the company and my background. I asked some questions too. It seemed positive, and the manager said the team would probably reply the following week. But then, the very next day, this same person told me my resume wasn't selected. It was a bit strange, honestly. I felt like my time was wasted. I'm not sure why, maybe they thought I'd be too expensive, or perhaps it was something else. I wouldn't suggest putting your time into this place.

I applied online and was frustratingly sent an online coding assessment before even speaking to a human. I withdrew from the process since I'm not going to spend 3 hours on a coding assessment if I haven't even spoken to a recruiter to learn more about the role/company. Very frustrating to see NextCapital handle interviews like this when it's something that not even FAANG companies do anymore. Makes it feel like they don't really value you as a person if you don't even get to talk to a recruiter unless you prove your worth by scoring high enough on a test.

So I started with a timed logic test, basically pattern recognition questions. About a week and a half later, I got a call for a phone screen. After that, I had an onsite that went for about 3 hours. The onsite kicked off with someone explaining company goals, their history, and how the business operates, which was pretty cool because they focused on that first before jumping into technical stuff. Then I had a coding session, working through some problems in Python. Following that, I had a chat about architecture, discussing my background, interests, and the team's current setup. The very last step was a final phone call before they extended an offer.

After applying, I got a phone screen invite a week later, but they asked me to do a HackerRank challenge first. I passed 2 coding challenges but failed 2 others which I felt were too difficult for someone not from a CS background. A few days after I followed up, they sent another timed math/logic test (easy) that took 30 min. I did it and got 13/15 correct. It was a mix of GMAT-style logic and math problems, and you had to be quick because it was timed. I'll admit the tests were fair, but the HackerRank challenge was way too hard for a typical Financial Engineer role. The recruiter went silent after that. My overall take is this startup is focused on building infrastructure and models, hence the difficult coding tests. It seems like they want everyone to be a programmer. So, don't be fooled by the job description if you're looking for a finance role; they're looking for programmers.
