First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Melissa & Doug.
Account Manager
The hiring process involves a phone screen, one-on-one meetings, and practical skills assessments tailored to the account manager position. It's a comprehensive, multi-step process that includes standard interview questions alongside on-site evaluations. A background check is the last step before an offer.
- What motivates your interest in joining our company?
Office Administrator
The interview process was very unusual. It involved a group setting where candidates were tested on skills and tasks. The interview ended as soon as someone made a mistake. It felt like a competition to see who could last the longest without errors, with the last person standing presumably getting the job.
- Can you share your previous experience in a similar role?
Content Marketing and Communications Manager
I got an email from a recruiter late at night asking to chat before the holidays, offering times as early as the next morning. I took it thinking I knew enough about the company as a mom and with my marketing experience. I figured it was a quick call, but they scheduled an hour, which was a bit weird, but I was excited to potentially work for a company I liked. The recruiter was nice the next day and talked about the company's changes and new direction. They then asked a lot about my background and why I was interested. There were also many detailed marketing questions, and I felt like she didn't fully grasp some of my answers because she'd ask about things I'd already mentioned. She seemed to think I'd be a good fit for the team and said she'd be in touch. I sent a thank you and clarified some points I didn't think she understood. No reply. I waited a few weeks and followed up, still interested and asking for an update. Still no reply. Even though I've found a new job and it's not about the role anymore, it felt really rude to be ghosted after taking up over an hour of my time, especially while I was on maternity leave. A simple 'we're going in a different direction' would have been fine. I've seen similar job postings since then, so it seems they weren't sure what they wanted, but it left a bad impression since I made time for the interview on short notice and had been a supporter of their product as a mom.
- Tell me about the distinctions between your positions at your previous employer?
- What additional marketing-related questions do you have?
Product Designer
The HR recruiter contacted me. She asked some good questions that I did my best to answer. She talked about the company and its culture, but didn't have many answers for my questions about the actual job. I felt it went well, and she said she'd passed my info to the Design team, who would contact me. I sent a follow-up email with more questions about benefits, but never heard back. The Design team also never reached out. I also never got a rejection, which is the minimum they could do. People put effort into these interviews, and companies just ghost them, not even an automated rejection. Whatever, their unprofessional attitude is something you'd want to avoid anyway.
