First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at McMaster University.
Business Analyst
It was a two-stage interview. First, an HR screen over Teams that focused on competencies. Then, a panel interview with IT leadership. They asked about how I handle stakeholder management, gather requirements, and my experience with enterprise systems. The process was pretty smooth and organized.
- Can you share an instance where you had to manage conflicting stakeholder priorities in a complex project?
- Tell me about a situation where you dealt with stakeholders who had competing priorities during a complicated implementation.
- Share an example of managing competing stakeholder priorities during a complex implementation.
Research Assistant
I sent my resume to the hiring manager and they invited me for an interview. It was a really chill one-on-one with the hiring manager. They asked about my background and experience, and if I was familiar with research systems and the research process. They mentioned it's best to have some research experience already. I heard back after 3-4 weeks.
- Can you tell me about any experience you have in clinical research?
- Do you have any relevant background or experience?
- Are you familiar with research systems?
Human Resources
This interview was really impersonal, didn't give me a feel for the company culture or the people. I didn't feel excited about the job after it was over. I really hope they look into how they conduct interviews to make it a more welcoming experience.
- What was a challenging situation you encountered, and how did you deal with it?
- Can you describe a time you had to work with someone challenging and how you managed that interaction?
- How would you approach an employee who isn't performing up to par?
Kitchen Staff
After you apply with your resume, they'll check if you generally fit the job. If your resume looks good, they might give you a quick call to see if you're really interested and available for more interviews. Then, you'll probably have a more detailed interview, either online or in person, with a hiring manager or recruiter. They'll want to know about your past experiences, what you can do, and why you want this job. Make sure to talk about your resume and how you match what they're looking for.
- Could you introduce yourself? And what about this role catches your eye?
- What would you say are your biggest strengths and also your weaknesses?
- Tell me about a tough work situation you were in and how you managed to sort it out.
