First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Mayer Brown.
Associate
It started with a screening with two attorneys, then there was a multi-hour rotation where I interviewed with one or two attorneys in each block. The interviews felt pretty conversational and were as much about them describing the firm to me as they were about them asking me questions.
- What practice areas of law interest you?
Legal Practice Assistant
Super straightforward interview conducted on-site for a Hybrid role. I tried to keep it professional, but the LPA interviewing was very unprofessional and rude. The LPA and the secretarial manager interviewing me were very hostile from the very beginning and made it clear that they were only interviewing me because the Director of Administration had been impressed with my resume and interview. From the very beginning the LPA treated me with contempt (due to my prior diverse legal experience) even going as far as asking me "if I had proper childcare" because they may need me to stay after hours - which is not only inappropriate, but legally questionable due to its discriminatory nature under employment laws. I'm pretty sure that question was not HR-approved. Extremely shady, condescending, and uncomfortable on-site interview experience that I withdrew my candidacy. If this is how they treat the interviewees, imagine how they treat employees!
- Is it okay if the partner doesn't always communicate with you about work they send your way?
- Are you alright with working for a partner who dislikes small talk and doesn't want to discuss your personal life?
- Do you have childcare available in case we require you to work beyond regular hours?
Financial Analyst
The interview process included a 30-minute chat with the assistant manager, followed by another 30 minutes with the line manager. I also spoke with a partner and some peers for 30 minutes each. It wasn't too tough. The line manager was pretty laid-back and mostly asked about my past experience, with a strong focus on whether I'd be a good culture fit and if I was looking for job stability. They ended up hiring someone with 10 years of experience from their last role.
- Could you explain how law firms structure their pricing?
Summer Vacation Scheme
The whole process from applying to finding out the result took about a month. The interview was about 15-20 minutes long. I thought I'd have to do a written test, but that didn't happen for me. I spoke with two partners and someone from HR. Everyone was super nice and it was a really relaxed vibe. They didn't really ask direct questions, it felt more like a conversation. They asked about my hobbies from the application and wanted to know more about me personally.
- How have you managed during the pandemic?
- What's your motivation for pursuing law?
- Could you elaborate on your personal interests?
