Product Manager
It started with a recruiter reaching out after I applied. We chatted about the role, next steps, and benefits. Then, I had a call with the hiring manager to go over the role more. She mentioned a take-home assignment and a panel discussion afterwards to review my thinking. I got the assignment on Monday, which took about 4 hours to complete, and sent it back Tuesday morning. On Wednesday, I got a rejection email saying they weren't moving forward, and I felt the process was a bit of a joke because they didn't even want to discuss the assignment I spent hours on. They didn't give any real feedback, just a generic rejection. Later, the recruiter gave more details, but it seemed to contradict the assignment instructions and the hiring manager's initial message. It felt like they were hesitant to make a decision, offered low pay, and had confusing communication.
- Can you tell me about recent projects you've worked on and how you ensured their success?
Software Engineer
I got a coding assessment that was pretty simple, just parsing and processing a file or dataset. I spent about a day on it, making sure to break down the pipeline into modules with interfaces, and added unit/integration tests without external dependencies. They initially liked my solution and progressed me to a behavioral interview with two engineering managers. They grilled me with "tell me a time you..." type questions, asking follow-ups like "what did you learn from that" and "describe X tech you used." It felt like they weren't interested from the start, but after it was over, I got an email saying my coding assessment was actually bad and I was rejected.
- Tell me about a time you...
- What did you learn from that experience?
- Can you describe a specific technology you used?
Customer Service Agent
A recruiter reached out because they liked my resume, and their boss agreed. I had a good phone screen with the recruiter. Then I had a virtual interview with 3 hiring managers. Two of them were really moody and changed their attitude halfway through, seeming annoyed by my answers, while the other manager was really engaged and positive. I didn't get the job, and it felt like the two managers who rejected me wanted someone super simple, and I was more complex than they were ready for. It seemed like a decision based on their personal mood that day rather than my skills or experience. It wasn't a contest for who they liked most, but I was denied the job due to personality clashes, which doesn't make sense for my ability to do the job. Based on this, I wouldn't recommend interviewing here.
- Can you tell me about your background?
- What makes you want to work in this role?
- What attracts you to our company?
IT Engineer
I applied and heard back from the recruiter, Billy, the same day. We had a casual chat a day later about my experience and company culture, with plenty of time for my questions. Billy let me know I advanced the next day. The following week, I had a second interview with two junior IT staff. It was more behavioral than technical, and they were really nice and helpful. Next, I interviewed with two more senior IT folks a week after that. This one was more technical but still conversational and I felt comfortable. A few days later, I had my final interview with the manager, who was great and really listened. It was also more of a conversation than a formal interview. I found out about a week and a half later that they weren't moving forward with an offer. The whole process took a bit over a month and felt pretty smooth. There were four interviews: 30 mins, 45 mins, 45 mins, and 30 mins. Billy was super responsive throughout, which was awesome.
