First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Kin Insurance.
Software Engineer
I got a coding assessment that was pretty simple, just parsing and processing a file or dataset. I spent about a day on it, making sure to break down the pipeline into modules with interfaces, and added unit/integration tests without external dependencies. They initially liked my solution and progressed me to a behavioral interview with two engineering managers. They grilled me with "tell me a time you..." type questions, asking follow-ups like "what did you learn from that" and "describe X tech you used." It felt like they weren't interested from the start, but after it was over, I got an email saying my coding assessment was actually bad and I was rejected.
- Tell me about a time you...
- What did you learn from that experience?
- Can you describe a specific technology you used?
Software Engineer
I spoke with a really nice recruiter who was helpful during the first phone screen. Then I had a behavioral interview with the Director of Engineering where I was asked about my experience and how it might fit at Kin. After that, I got a take-home project to build a small Angular app with all the requested features and unit tests. I finished it quickly but got rejected, seemingly because my solution was too simple. It sounds like they prefer custom solutions and building their own tools, which is great if that's your style, but the work itself didn't seem that complicated.

Software Engineer
First, I had a recruiter call which was a nice intro. Then, I completed a code challenge. After that, there was a coding/pairing day with developers. This was followed by a behavioral interview, and then an interview with the director of engineering. They reviewed my code challenge, but ultimately decided not to move forward with my candidacy. I'm a bit annoyed that I didn't get to discuss my code submission. I'm confident in my skills and believe my code was well-written, but I suppose it wasn't what they were looking for. So, be aware that they take code reviews very seriously and might reject you without discussing it with you.
- What are your motivations for seeking a new position?
