First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at J.D. Irving.
Student Engineer
The interview process was pretty simple. First, I had to do a pre-recorded interview with two questions about my education and my interest in the company. After that, I had a call with a recruiter. The last step was an interview with the HR director. Each interview was only about 15 minutes long, and they usually responded within a week or two after each round.
- The questions were similar to the first stage, and they also included some situational questions like 'what would you do in this situation?'. They were mainly assessing soft skills to see if you'd fit with the team. I heard they don't ask any technical questions. The final interview was also similar to the first one, with questions like 'why did you pick your major?' and other simple personal questions.
Heavy Equipment Operator and Heavy Truck Driver
The process was well organized. It began with an online pre-selection interview to confirm experience and certifications. Then, there was an in-person event where I had a direct conversation with recruiters from J.D. Irving and Gulf Operators. They asked about operating excavators, dump trucks, and workplace safety. The recruiters were professional, friendly, and objective. They looked for candidates with functional English, proven hands-on experience, and safety courses recognized in Canada.
- Could you tell me about your years of experience with heavy equipment like loaders, excavators, and trucks?
- Do you possess a passport?
- Is your English proficiency test valid?
Security Specialist
My interview experience at JD Irving was horrible and terrible. I applied for the Security Specialist role. Initially, things were smooth with a phone interview, an online personality assessment, and then a panel interview. The hiring manager was great. However, the process deteriorated afterward. I was interviewed by the director who asked some strange but acceptable questions. Then came a period of no communication for 2-3 weeks despite my follow-ups. Suddenly, I was invited for a final round with the VP. I gave my availability but heard nothing for another 2-3 weeks. Eventually, I received a rejection email without even interviewing with the VP. My request for feedback was ignored. The whole process took 2-3 months, ending with a strange rejection. While hiring can be complex, ghosting seems to be a common practice here. I'd advise staying away.
- Can you describe your background in network security, IAM, and vulnerability assessment?
Operations Leader
I applied in mid-November 2023 for the Operations Leader role via their online portal. It took about 15 weeks from applying to getting an offer. The process involved: first, submitting a video questionnaire; then, a Cognitive Assessment; followed by a Behavioural Assessment. After that, there was an onsite interview with a panel consisting of a Sr Process Engineer, an Asset Manager, and a Process Tech. Next, a virtual interview with a panel including the Plant Manager and HR Manager. Then, a Mechanical Aptitude Assessment. Finally, a virtual interview with a panel of the VP of HR, VP of Manufacturing, and Director of Operations. I still had one more assessment, a background check, and reference submissions to complete when I got an offer elsewhere (different industry) and decided to withdraw my application. The Irving team seemed really knowledgeable about their work and enthusiastic about it. They definitely have a lot of institutional knowledge.
- Can you share an example of how you've reacted to and adapted to change?
- What's your leadership style like?
- How do you go about motivating and supervising people?
