First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Institute of International Education.
Program Officer
It was a pretty standard process, they really wanted to see if I was ready for the work and if I would be a good culture fit. They emphasized the importance of working independently and asked about my availability to start. The people I talked to were really nice and made it easy to talk. They also gave a clear outline of what would happen next.

Program Coordinator
I applied online and heard back a month later to schedule a phone screening. The call lasted about an hour, and the HR recruiter was really nice, explaining the job details which helped me prepare. The interview had standard questions about the role and my past experience. I interviewed with two people, but one left halfway through, which I thought was a bad sign. Even though there are bad reviews about the environment, I didn't experience anything negative and both interviewers were professional. I was told a week later they hired someone else.
- Please discuss how your previous experience aligns with the requirements of this position.
- Could you share your understanding of the core IIE values as presented on their website, and be prepared to answer behavioral questions based on them?
Financial Analyst
I applied online and heard back from them about 2 weeks later. The recruiter actually told me to call him back in 2 days if I didn't hear anything, which made me feel confident. The main issue was that my salary expectation was about 8-10k higher than what they were offering, which I knew from a friend who works there. Instead of being upfront, the recruiter strung me along for three weeks, giving excuses like not hearing from the hiring manager, bad weather, or the manager being sick. Meanwhile, they were interviewing other people who asked for less money. While that's fine, it's not cool to lie to a candidate and keep them chasing you when you know you won't hire them. Total sleazeball move. They ended up hiring someone else after five weeks, and I never heard back. Not surprising they have a 2.5-star rating.
- What is your understanding of the company's mission and values?
- Can you tell me about the company's primary objectives as stated on their website?
- What are your main strengths?
Program Officer
I applied for the Program Officer role and was first contacted by a recruiter for a phone interview. The phone interview seemed to go fine, with typical questions. After that, the recruiter told me that my experience was too dated since I'd been out of the international education field for about a year. A few weeks later, a different recruiter reached out, saying the first one had left and they were actually interested in moving forward with my application. I then had two in-person interviews: one with an HR person and the hiring manager, and another with the head of the division. They mentioned they were finishing up the process and would be in touch. I noticed the job was reposted on the company's site the same day as my interview. I tried emailing my recruiter for three weeks to check on the status but got no response. Eventually, I received an automated notification that the position was canceled. The recruiter then followed up, explaining that there was a reorganization and an internal candidate was selected, without any mention of her previous lack of communication. Despite the poor recruiting experience, the other staff I interacted with were pleasant and knowledgeable.
