& Process

You'll have a 30-minute meeting with 5 different people at the Columbus, OH home office. You'll talk with everyone from the recruiter up to a VP. They'll all share company feedback and ask you questions throughout. There's also plenty of time for YOU to ask questions, so be ready.

I applied for the QA/QC Manager role. In the first interview, I was upfront about my desired roles, responsibilities, and salary. They scheduled a second interview, which they said would be at least 2.5 hours. I mentioned afternoons work best, but they scheduled it for 8:30 am. Upon arrival, I was told I'd meet with 6 people. First was the office manager, then an HR rep who asked if I was okay with the Sr. Quality Engineer title. I said I wasn't concerned with title as long as the responsibilities and salary matched my expectations. She confirmed my salary expectations and assured me it wouldn't be an issue. The rest of the interviews were conversational with the director of operations, director of QC, and 2 QC managers. It felt like a good exchange of ideas, and two interviewers said they'd recommend me immediately. Three days later, I received an offer that was only 66% of my expected base salary. When I expressed surprise, they said it was the top salary for that title. As a business owner, I went through a lot to make their interview times work. I was clear about my salary expectations from the start, and they didn't respect that or clearly state their salary range, resulting in a bait and switch.

Holder Construction recruited me right out of college. After our initial meeting, I went through three interviews and they put me up in a nice hotel near their Atlanta office. The next morning, we had our first in-person interview, and everyone was super welcoming. I got a lot of compliments on my suit, which was a relief because I was worried I'd dressed too formally. I met with people and got to choose from three departments, which I regrettably had to decide on that same day, not giving myself enough time to really think it through. They do say that you can move between departments, but you have to prove yourself in your current one before switching. I sometimes wonder if I should have started in a different department.

Applied through the website and got contacted within days. First was a pre-screen interview asking about myself, why I applied, and my experience. Then I was put into their database, and someone reached out a few days later. They offered to fly me to Atlanta for a 2-3 hour interview, covering flights and hotel. The Atlanta interview involved meetings with 4 people in different roles like 'Pre Construction' and 'Superintendent'. They're looking for passionate people they can train because they need more workers. I had experience as a Project Engineer at a small GC, but no construction management degree. Don't be too stressed; it's more of a conversation to get to know you.
