First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Harrison Street.
Analyst
It's a four step process. You start with an intro interview, then a model test that's not too hard, usually under 2 hours. If you can build a simple DCF and an amortization table, you'll pass it. Then there's a panel interview with multiple people from different departments. Finally, there's a final interview. The panels will ask about your past experience, your interest in alternatives, and have you walk through your resume. They might ask a few technical questions, but having a strong narrative will help you through the process. Make sure you know the market data you mention when answering questions and demonstrate your analytical skills.
- Can you tell me about a recent deal you were involved in and also walk me through your resume?
Asset Management Analyst
The first part was with two analysts. It was all technical questions, no behavioral ones, and they were pretty basic. It was a little tough because there weren't any behavioral questions to help show personality. Then there was a take-home modeling test. I got 2 hours to do it, but I could look at it beforehand.
- Given $100 million for investment, what would be your chosen investments?
Intern
Had a really good time interviewing, folks were nice. 3 person first round might be intimidating for some. 3 rounds total including a phone screen. First was a 15 min screener covering why real estate, why Harrison, and other basic job questions. Second was a 30 min zoom call with questions on why real estate, why Harrison, weaknesses, and 1-2 basic real estate metric techs (CoC return, equity multiple, DSCR). Last round was with a VP+ and more technical, but not overly so.
- Can you explain your interest in real estate?
- What makes you want to work at Harrison?
- Describe a situation and outline your proposed course of action, considering various timeframes.
Senior Associate
I had a video phone screen with the hiring manager, not HR, which went fine and happened quickly. Then I had to schedule an in-person interview, and it was tough because their availability was really limited, giving me only a few days' notice. This wasn't very considerate, especially since I'm working full-time. After all that, I didn't hear back from the hiring department for over a month, even after I followed up. They waited a full month to tell me they chose someone else after bringing me in on short notice for an in-person interview, which is pretty unacceptable.
- Can you share an example of a challenge you encountered and how you addressed it?
- Please describe a time you had to collaborate with a challenging coworker.
- Could you provide an instance of a project you managed and the results it yielded?
