I don't usually review, but the job market is rough and lots of bad candidate experiences get shared, so I wanted to give props to Golden Hippo for doing it right. Saw the job on LinkedIn and they hit me up for a recruiter screen just hours later, which was super fast. My first chat with Claire, the recruiter, was chill and friendly. She asked about my comms background, SEO/PR experience, and why I was interested in Golden Hippo. About a week later, I had my first interview with the hiring manager and someone on his team. It was a cool, deep talk, more like a strategy chat than just Q&A. They hit me with some behavioral questions and really seemed keen on how I approach storytelling, brand strategy, and leading teams. The next interview was with the PR and SEO folks. We talked about how I'd handle positioning, the changing landscape of PR, and how SEO and AI combine to boost brand visibility today. The questions were smart and on point, and you could tell they knew their stuff. The last interview was with the GM of the Pet Category, went for about an hour. It was a broad, interesting conversation about where the company is headed, the pet industry's evolution, and what winning in this role would look like. We talked about getting teams to work together better, boosting brand stories, and the kind of leader who could really make a mark. Even though I didn't get the job, the whole process was super open, quick, and respectful, maybe the best I've had. Everyone I talked to was pro, nice, and genuinely into their jobs. I got a great feel for the company culture and leadership and would totally be up for working with them down the line.

I went through 3 interviews for this role. The first two went great, but the third one was with company leadership and they seemed confused about the job. It was posted as a marketing design and management role, and the leads in the first two interviews understood it that way. But in the third interview, they asked me about training a cold-call sales team, which felt like a waste of time since it wasn't related to the job. They did send a nice gift afterwards though.

I reached out to a recruiter after applying for the YouTube Channel & Analytics Specialist role. They responded and we scheduled a phone screening. During the call, the recruiter seemed to be focused on YouTube Ads and Media Buying, which wasn't related to the role I applied for. They were upfront that my experience might not be a fit, but we continued the conversation. After I introduced myself, the recruiter admitted my experience might not align and offered another role, which turned out to be the one I originally applied for. When I clarified, they scrambled to contact the hiring recruiter for that role, only to find out an offer had already been extended to another candidate. The interview ended there. I later messaged the recruiter to clarify the situation. They explained it was a timing issue, and by the time I applied, they were in the final stages for that position. According to them, my recruiter call itself had no mix-up, but it seems they weren't aware of multiple YouTube roles being open. I suspect they mistakenly thought my initial outreach was for a different role. If an offer was already out, this screening wouldn't have happened. It was an error on their part. I'm not upset, just wish for more honesty as I put a lot of effort into preparing for the interview, only for this to happen. The recruiter is nice, and mistakes do happen.

I started with a chat with the HR Manager to make sure I met the basic requirements. Then, I had a longer-than-expected interview with two managers who seemed to get along with me well. We went over my experience and my pros and cons. It felt like a good match, but then I heard nothing back for over a week, even though they said I'd hear from them within that time. I sent a thank you note, and then a follow-up email a week or two later. Eventually, I had to email HR to find out they'd gone with someone else who was referred internally, without even letting me know. The interviews were fine, but their follow-up was really unprofessional.
