First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at General Assembly.
Instructional Associate
The process started with one round. First, they wanted to understand your motivations for choosing this role. Then, they asked about what you can offer in terms of personality, skills, and areas of interest. Expectations were clarified, covering salary, commitment, and the scope of work. Finally, they discussed what comes next, including the estimated time to get confirmation, contract details, and administrative matters.
- What makes you want to be an Instructional Associate?
Data Science Instructor
They have a strong culture of empathy in the classroom. They're looking for instructors who can provide psychological safety and emotional encouragement. This is super important for adult learners who might be dealing with jobs, families, and the stress of going back to school. If you're the type who likes to go beyond just teaching the material and really focus on your students' development, this is a great place for you.
- Tell me about a time you helped an adult student who was having a hard time emotionally or academically, especially when they lacked the necessary technical skills.
- Can you give an instance where you've provided emotional or psychological support to an adult learner facing academic or emotional difficulties due to a lack of technical understanding?
- Share a situation where you helped an adult learner who was struggling emotionally or academically because they didn't have the technical knowledge.
Admissions Specialist
There were two main parts to the interview process, conducted online via Zoom since it's a remote company. First, I spoke with the VP of admissions, which was purely behavioral questions. Then, I had a second interview with the regional manager. This round included more behavioral questions and a sales roleplay exercise. After that, they gave me feedback and asked me to come back for another interview within 24 hours to see how I could take on the feedback. It was a pretty straightforward process, casual but informative, and everyone was really friendly.
- Could you elaborate on your past work experience and explain its connection to the admissions specialist role?
- Share details about your work history and how it applies to being an admissions specialist.
- Walk us through your professional background and demonstrate its relevance for the admissions specialist position.
Career Coach
It was a 30-min initial phone screening. Then a 1-hr phone call with a Career Coach on the team, followed by a 1-hr phone call with the Career Coach manager. The next step was a 1-hr presentation, which involved a 20-min talk on a professional development topic and a 20-min "glow and grow" session. I actually left the process after this when I got another offer. Throughout the process, the recruiter contacted me after every interview and the day before each upcoming one. These calls often happened after 5 PM and sometimes contained info that could have been emailed. There was also an instance where the recruiter used the wrong name, and they kept calling me even when I was sick and had to miss an interview. I didn't feel very respected.
- Could you tell me about your career coaching approach?
- What would you do if a student expected you to secure all their job opportunities?
- What are your key strengths and areas for development?
