I had an initial chat with a recruiter who was new and didn't seem to know much about the role or what we do day-to-day. It felt like she was just going through a checklist instead of really seeing what candidates could do. She couldn't answer a lot of my questions, even though she gave some info on the hiring steps.

I applied for a team leader, or camp counselor role, and went through their typical online interview. It was with other applicants. We each had three minutes to show, teach, and play a game or sing a song we would lead as a team leader. I picked the game "Zen." After that, I had another interview for Assistant Camp Director. The people interviewing were nice, friendly, and kept things relaxed. In this second interview, they asked more about my leadership and management abilities. The hiring team was really helpful in finding me a position that fit my experience and skills, and I ended up as an Onsite Substitute.

It was a 15-minute video chat to see what I looked like. No phone screen, no group thing, it was super fast. Seemed unprofessional and casual, not really asking about the job itself, mostly about how competitive I am. No DEI questions, no questions about how I'd handle the actual tasks of the role, just a back-and-forth about how much enthusiasm and desperation I could show for an $18/hour customer service rep position.

  • In terms of being competitive, how do you function as part of a team?
  • Considering there are ongoing projects outside your usual duties that require attention, how would you describe your approach as a team member?

I applied for the role mid-June and got scheduled for my first phone screen the week after, they asked some general questions and then I moved on to the Hiring Manager. The interview with the Hiring Manager went well, and I then had a panel interview with two staff members from their People Team. This interview included some behavioral, situational, and role play questions. Within a day, I was invited to the Final interview stage. They were flexible and gave me one option for an interview due to my camp visits, which I appreciated. At this point, I was given a take-home assessment that was pretty straightforward. My final interview was with the CEO and Hiring Manager, where I presented my work sample and felt the conversation was productive. I was told I'd hear back by the beginning of the following week, but after a week passed, I had to reach out to find out they were moving forward with other candidates. I didn't receive any feedback or follow-up. The recruiter's communication was prompt, and they even used text for convenience. Surprisingly, another EXTERNAL recruiter contacted me the following week about the same role, mentioning my experience and skillset. This was after I had already gone through a month of interviews for it. It's good to know that other qualified candidates were advanced, and I got to practice presenting action items for the organization. I was initially content with the process, but getting contacted again for the same role by someone I've never met left a negative impression. I wish the organization luck. [edit 9/29] I was contacted again! After I told the recruiter I had already applied and interviewed for this role, I thought it would be resolved. A month later, I received two emails promoting the same role again. Given I applied in June and completed the entire interview process, and still don't know the feedback from the interview panel, I'm puzzled why I'm still being recruited. This clearly indicates poor communication and lack of internal alignment, which reflects on their organizational structure.
