First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Furniture Row.
Sales Associate Manager
There are two interviews: one with the store manager and the second with the regional manager. The first interview is super chill and involves a tour, meeting some staff, and some light conversation with common questions to gauge your personality. The second interview is more intense, lasting anywhere from 1.5 to 3.5 hours, and feels like an interrogation of your character. Remember, Furniture Row does a THOROUGH BACKGROUND CHECK after the second interview, and it's a DRUG FREE WORKPLACE, so be truthful about everything, but be very careful about mentioning any past or present drug use, even if it's legal.
- Do you prefer working independently or as part of a team? Explain why.
Manager-In-Training
This is a 3-part interview process that can take a while, like weeks to months, mostly depending on when the regional manager can come to town for the last "audit" interview. All 3 interviews feel kind of intrusive. Instead of focusing on your skills, they ask about your parents, if you're married, your hobbies, what you do on your days off, and if you've used drugs in the last 5 years (how recent is "ok" seems to depend on your age). They also ask on the "audit" form if you have any debts and how much. You'd think it was for a government job, but it's just retail.
- Most people are basically ______________, what 2-3 things matter most in a new job to you?
- Where'd you go to school and what did you do well in?
- Describe a time you followed procedure to solve a problem even though it would've been easier to skip it.
Sales
The interview process was incredibly lengthy and felt intrusive, with several questions that seemed illegal and delved too deep into personal matters. Their follow-up was also terrible. I had an interview on Monday, was asked back for a second one the next day, and was told I'd get a call that same day to set up the third and final interview. I stayed around town waiting for hours, but when I finally called, they said the regional manager had already left and they'd reschedule in a few days. After waiting a week, I called again. They mentioned the regional manager was out of town but really wanted me to meet him and suggested I call back in a week. So, I called a week later, and they said they'd call me in two weeks when the regional manager was back. It's absurd to make a candidate constantly chase for updates and information. It's really rude and unprofessional. Given the runaround and invasive initial interviews, I wouldn't accept a job here anyway and plan to report the illegal questions, which I've documented. There are better furniture stores with better service.
- Can you tell me about your childhood?
- Are you married?
- Could you tell me what your spouse does?
Sales Consultant
There are usually 2-3 interviews, depending on how quickly they need to hire. You'll start with a store manager interview, which is about 30 minutes and pretty basic. The final interview is with the Regional Manager and it's really long and personal. My interview was 2 hours and 45 minutes, but they usually last at least 2 hours, sometimes over 3. They ask personal stuff like if your parents are divorced (they really prefer people whose parents aren't), if you do drugs, or if your friends or family use drugs (they won't hire you if you or anyone you know uses drugs). They also do criminal and financial background checks. The reason the interview takes so long is they ask the same questions over and over to try and catch you in a lie.
- Could you tell me about your parents' occupations and marital status?
- Are your parents still married?
- Are you currently married?
