& Process

A recruiter contacted me about a brief phone call with a senior member of the team. That phone call, which lasted about five minutes, was the initial phone screen. After that, the same recruiter sent over a questionnaire that I had a week to complete. A few days later, I was invited for an in-person interview. The recruiter asked for my availability, but then completely ignored it, even after a week of back-and-forth messages trying to schedule. I mentioned that any weekday morning would work since I have a full-time job and other commitments. Somehow, they managed to schedule it for 4 pm on a Wednesday. Seriously? I was told it would be a 45-minute interview with two people. It ended up being almost an hour and a half with four different interviewers asking pretty much the same questions. Again, seriously? I made it clear I'd need to take time off work for this, so I found their scheduling to be quite disrespectful. If it's with four people, they should tell candidates so they can be prepared! It was a huge waste of time. On top of that, the first interviewer, who was also the recruiter I spoke with on the phone, was clearly rushed and ended our chat early because she had another call she already knew about before our meeting. Big red flags everywhere. I'm actually glad I didn't get an offer.

I found the job on the Fortress website and a recruiter reached out. We had a phone call, and then they set up 4 video interviews for the next week via Google Hangout. When it was time for the interviews, I had to wait 20 minutes for the recruiter to join. Only one of us had a camera, so I mostly saw myself. The whole thing felt really unorganized. As someone who's worked with recruiters since college, I was surprised by how messy their process seemed. It took them ages to get back to me, and by then I'd already accepted another job.

So I started by going over my resume, like, from my education all the way through my work history. Then the interviewer asked a bunch of behavioral questions, covering stuff like leadership, what I think my strengths and weaknesses are, my proudest accomplishment, how I handle stress and prioritize, and more. They also asked about why I was interested in Fortress, what I expected from the job, my understanding of FP&A, and if I was okay with working overtime.

I met with some senior execs and staff. We talked about profit opportunities and challenges for the fund business. I presented my strategy ideas. The Fortress execs asked a lot of detailed questions and shared how my strategy could align with their platform. They explained how Fortress could support my success using their capital and infrastructure.
