I applied online and the recruiter sent over a coding assignment as the first step, which I did. Then, I was invited to the office in San Jose, CA for in person interviews. The whole thing took about 2 weeks. The recruiter set up the interviews and gave me directions to the office and who would be interviewing me. I met with 3 people total, including two managers who asked about my background and just talked with me. The hiring manager introduced himself and said he and the other managers I met have worked together before. He mentioned he's got funding to spend wisely and make an impact, and said at least 3 more times that he can fire people or they should know when to leave. He also talked about long hours and weekend work because it's a startup. His comments made it seem like he's an inexperienced engineer new to a leadership role. Having worked at startups, this was surprising and unprofessional, especially for this company's reputation.

The interview started with a recruiter screening. They seemed to be overselling the company and downplaying negative reviews. A weird part was when they claimed their compensation was competitive and said "unlimited" PTO was comparable to my current 5 weeks, while also not mentioning a 401k match. After that, they wanted me to do a 1-hour technical interview with Leetcode-style questions, followed by more rounds. It felt off to do a technical interview before talking to anyone on the team for a manager role. Given the low pay and consistent bad reviews, I decided to withdraw my application.

The interview process is outlined well on their site. First was an initial call with a talent acquisition partner which was roughly 15 mins long. Second was an initial technical interview, where I spoke with the interviewer for 30 mins and then followed up with a simple real-world problem. Third was a two part interview, where I did pair coding in the frontend for the first hour and pair coding in the backend for the next hour. Finally, there was a 15 minute call with the director of software engineering.

My experience was mostly negative. I had two technical interviews. The first was a straightforward JavaScript DSA problem. The second interview lasted two hours, split into one hour for backend and one hour for frontend, both conducted on Replit. The backend part involved a basic Node server where I had to provide pseudocode as the given code was not runnable. The frontend challenge, which was to design and build an app checkout page, was clearer, but I struggled with running their React code, limiting my time. I was not hired, and I suspect the competition was high. They couldn't provide feedback due to policy. Notably, the same job was reposted on LinkedIn shortly after, appearing to be a copy-paste with an old application deadline. This, coupled with the lack of feedback and the job posting being up for three months, makes me question their hiring process and intent.
