The interview was tough, with lots of detailed questions and a job shadow which made it intense, but it turned out to be a really good experience. Seeing the person I shadowed really love their job made the role seem even cooler. Even though the process felt a bit scary sometimes, the interviewers were super encouraging, and we had good chats that weren't part of the official questions. All in all, it was a hard interview, but the people made it feel friendly and motivating.

First, there was a quick 15-minute phone call to screen me. After that, they invited me for an in-person interview. The in-person part lasted for two hours. The first hour was spent shadowing current underwriters so I could get a feel for the daily tasks. The second hour was a rapid-fire session of answering STAR-style questions.

So the interview process at Federated was pretty long, took a few months from when I applied to when I started. First, I sent in my application and resume, then they sent me a link to a skills test. That test was mostly about reading, math, and general office stuff, and it took about 1.5 hours. After that, they reached out to schedule a phone interview. Once that was done, they set up an in-person interview. That was followed by a second round interview. For the second round, I had to create a design and then present it. They mentioned they were down to two candidates, so it wasn't a waste of time for many people. I got about a week to work on the design assignment before the interview. After that, I got the offer. They were really nice and clear about what was happening throughout the whole thing.

Had an initial phone screening with the district manager, who seemed to be a millennial or Gen Z and talked more than listened. I was told I'd get a personality test by email and to finish it. I did, and after trying to follow up three times, it's been a month and I've heard nothing back. This is a perfect example of how this generation lacks respect and decorum; have some courage and at least send a quick note to let a candidate know something instead of wasting their time.
