First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Ethicon Endo-Surgery.
R&D Engineer
It started with a background chat. Then, there were some technical and leadership questions, which took up the first half. For the second half, I got to ask them anything about the company and the job.
- Tell me about a favorite leader you've worked with and what qualities you admire in them.
Product Development Engineer
So I had this initial phone screen with HR, and they just wanted to confirm my experience and tell me about the job. After that, I got scheduled for a phone interview with the Hiring Manager and two other managers from the team. The questions were all about the qualifications and experience from the job listing, which was nice because I could prep. Then, I had a full-day interview on-site where I met with a bunch of managers and engineers. All the questions were about how I'd use my experience with Johnson & Johnson's core values. They covered my hotel and reimbursed my gas. I got an offer about 3 weeks later.
- Can you share an instance where you faced an ethical dilemma involving team members and how you resolved it?
Engineering Co-Op
About a 1 hour interview with 3 interviewers. It was roughly half technical and half behavioral. The technical part included questions like drawing a free body diagram of ______, explaining different mechanisms you use to accomplish ______, and ways to manufacture ________. The behavioral part consisted of typical leadership, situational, and challenge questions where they were looking for you to draw on your past experiences.
- Tell me about a time you used your street smarts at work.
Technical Writer
I was working as a contractor through an agency, and this agency pretty much staffs all the contractors at Ethicon. I applied through a friend and then got a call from HR for some general questions. After the HR round, I was told to send my documents to the contracting company. Then I got a call to speak with the program manager, who was located somewhere else. After that, there was a technical interview. Finally, I had a conversation with the Ethicon manager about the job.
- Can you discuss your understanding of end-users?
- What are your project management skills as they relate to technical writing?
