First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Dean & Company.
Consultant
The interview lasts about 30-45 minutes and consists of a single case study. They'll start by explaining the case, and you'll have the chance to ask initial questions. As you go through the case, they'll ask more questions. It's mostly like the McKinsey style.
- Could you share which course has been your favorite?
- Can you describe a project you've been involved in?
Strategy Associate
I met with 3 people for this role: an analyst, a VP, and the President. The interview was pretty straightforward. They really focused on quantitative analysis and didn't ask any behavioral or fit questions. It would be best to look over case study guides beforehand. Case study #1 was about a Telecomm company where I had to analyze call-center costs and efficiency, looking at variable vs. fixed costs. Case study #2 involved a retail company where I needed to improve revenue by analyzing volume, price, and product. Overall, it was a pleasant experience because the people were very nice.

I had an on-campus 1st round interview that was supposed to be 30 minutes but only lasted 20 because the interviewer was late. I got a call the same night and they invited me for 2 more interviews back-to-back the next day. The first round was just a case, which was all we had time for, and I was surprised to get called back for the second round. The second round interviews were a mix of fit questions (like why consulting, why Dean, and other basic stuff) and a case. The cases were pretty similar to what you'd see at Dean and with their clients, mostly involving telecom and math. I felt like I connected well with 2 out of the 3 interviewers and it was a good experience, but one interviewer really didn't seem happy to be there, especially doing 2 full days of interviews back-to-back, each lasting 30-45 minutes.
- As part of a larger case, what's the estimated cost for the client to rent office space?
Analyst
I applied through the university's career site and got an interview on campus. The interviewer was late which was a bit odd. The interview was numerical and not like the typical consulting cases I've done before. The case was different than expected because I had to calculate numbers myself that are usually given, like revenue and customer attrition. The interviewer wasn't helpful or responsive and seemed grumpy. His phone rang multiple times, and he looked at it during the interview, which was unprofessional. He didn't try to get to know me at all. Out of all my interviews this year, this was my least favorite.
- The case was numerical, so be prepared to think quickly.
