First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at David Lloyd Clubs.
Personal Trainer
It wasn't your typical interview. The first stage was a 'group interview' with all the candidates. We got a quick tour of the club, then went to a room for the rest of the interview. It was broken down into different activities. First, we all did a quick self-introduction. Then, we had 5-10 minutes to prepare a 2-minute presentation on a personal interest or hobby. After that, there was a group activity where we all worked together on a creative scenario, like ranking items for a desert island survival situation, and we were scored on it. Finally, we had to do a short demonstration of a warm-up, an exercise with its progression and regression, and a cool-down. Then there was time for questions, and that was basically it.

General Manager
Had a 1-on-1 initial interview with the GM. It was super friendly and welcoming. They asked basic questions like 'tell me about yourself' and 'why this role'. We talked for about 75 minutes about my CV, my experience, the club, and what she was looking for. It seems like a big factor for these roles is personality fit with the club or current team. I did ask for feedback after not getting the job, but never received any. It's a shame because these roles don't come up often locally, and more feedback would really help people's careers.
- Tell me about yourself, why you are interested in this role, and what your future career aspirations are. Where do you see yourself in 2 and 5 years?
Sales
Got a call for a group assessment, but on the day, the manager changed it to a one-on-one competency interview and moved it an hour earlier. The interview was outdoors, in the sun, with customers and kids around. It lasted about 1.5 hours. The manager seemed unprepared, not knowing my CV or the role. I was told I'd hear back by Friday, but a week later on Thursday, I was told the manager was on leave. Then on Saturday, I got a call for a second interview in an hour because the regional manager was visiting. I had to change my plans. After waiting another 30 minutes, I had a chat with the managers, but left feeling underwhelmed and undervalued. For a premium company, the process felt disorganized and unprofessional, making me not want to proceed.

- What skills and attributes do you possess that would be beneficial for this position?
Personal Trainer
The interview takes place over two days. On the first day, there's a group interview where management gives a presentation. It's important to actively participate and speak up during this part; staying silent won't work. The goal is to see who is comfortable talking, as being a personal trainer means you need to be able to engage with new clients you haven't met before.
- You'll need to prepare an in-house business plan for the interview.
- Your plan should cover how you aim to grow the business.
- Outline what your financial targets are.
