First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Chartwell Consulting.
Graduate Associate
First, there was an online assessment and an online case study. Then, I was invited for an in-person interview in central London. This consisted of a group case study with 6 people, focused on operations consulting, followed by a 1:1 behavioural interview.
- Do you mind travelling frequently for work?
Graduate Student
The interview process started with a presentation, followed by a group case study in the morning. We had a light lunch before a competency and motivational interview in the afternoon. It was a pretty chill and interesting experience, though it seemed like no one in the group case study got the correct answer.
- What motivated you to apply to Chartwelling Consulting?
Associate Consultant
So I went for this assessment day on campus, it started with a quick intro to the company in the morning. Then we had a group case interview for about an hour. After that, there were two short tests, one for math and one for common sense, each taking around 10-15 minutes. Next, I got an individual case to work on for 50 minutes, which involved reading some info and writing down my answers. We then had lunch with a recruiter, though you could leave for lunch if you wanted. In the afternoon, I had my interview which was split into two 20-minute slots. The first was to go over my individual case answers, and the second was mainly behavioral, where they also asked about my willingness to relocate and travel. The recruiters were really professional and nice, making the interviews feel pretty relaxed. They got back to me pretty fast, within a week.
- Can you identify the root cause of the factory's inefficiency?
- Based on the production line data, what are your recommendations for costs, profits, and strategic decisions?
- Could you explain your approach and conclusions for the individual case study?
Junior Consultant
The first round was an onsite group interview with about a dozen other candidates, facilitated by junior consultants. It started with a 30-minute presentation about Chartwell. Then, there was an hour-long group case study where we had to identify the root cause of a problem in a manufacturing process and present it, focusing on teamwork and suggestion quality. We could ask three questions to the interviewers. After the case, there were two 15-minute quizzes, one math and one mechanics. Then, we had 45 minutes individually to read and answer questions about another manufacturing line case, focusing on industrial engineering aspects like throughput and cycle time. This was followed by lunch and then one-on-one interviews. The first 30-minute one-on-one was to discuss the individual case answers. The second one-on-one started with feedback on the group interview, followed by a brain teaser and a couple of fit questions. The second round was a 2-hour event with partners and a senior consultant, involving another industrial/manufacturing engineering-focused case study about inputs and outputs with basic calculations. Afterwards, they asked why I wanted to work there, about consultant attributes, a detailed complex project, and how to understand an unknown mechanical system, with time for questions. This round was more rigorous, with partners putting us under pressure. My overall impression of the company was not good; they're a small, new company in the industrial sector expecting commitment like top firms (MBB) but with lower pay and fewer incentives. One partner's swearing was also off-putting.
