First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Bungie.
Software Engineer in Test
I did a take home coding project in C#. It was a bit more open-ended and longer than a typical Leetcode assessment, taking me about 3-4 hours. After that, I had the hiring manager interview, which covered basic behavioral questions and asked me to walk through how I'd approach creating test cases for a new Destiny 2 weapon.
- Describe how you would thoroughly test a new weapon being introduced into Destiny.
3D Artist
The interviewer was super nice, even apologizing for a time mix-up because of an emergency. He knew his stuff and asked really deep questions about my creative process and what I want to do in my career. We chatted for about an hour. It was really professional but also chill and fun. His follow-up emails were also great and informative. I then talked with the Art Director for the role, and they were also really friendly and knew a lot about what we were discussing. I didn't get the job because of some unexpected layoffs at Bungie, but honestly, it was a fantastic interview process, probably the best I've ever had.
- Tell me about your experience.
- What's your educational background?
- Walk me through your creative process.
Software Architect
Started with a recruiter chat, which was fine. Then talked to the hiring manager, and that went well too. Got past the initial interview easily. Then had a take-home assignment that took about 6 hours. I needed an extension because it overlapped with GDC. When the time was up, I realized I had approached the problem differently than they expected (I followed the scenario exactly, but later understood they were assessing something else). Still, I submitted it and let the recruiter know I was open to redoing it their way if needed.
- Can you explain a creative scenario involving a library checkout system, which serves as an allegory for a system pertinent to Bungie's platform, and how it assessed your real-world experiences versus theoretical knowledge?
Environment Artist
So after I applied online, they first sent me this online form and a NDA. Then, pretty quickly, I got a art test that took me about a week or two to complete. Once I submitted that, I had a phone call with a recruiter. Later that same day, we set up a video call with the hiring manager for the next week. The day after that chat, they set up the full interview loop, which was a whole day of back-to-back interviews with producers, artists, and designers. It wrapped up with another talk with the hiring manager and a final check-in with the recruiter. Two days after all that, the recruiter called with the offer details.
- Can you talk about your process as an artist?
- How do you work with designers and other artists?
- How do you handle task management?
