First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Berry Appleman & Leiden.
Immigration Assistant
So I interviewed for an entry level immigration assistant role. The interviewer was 5 minutes late and didn't say anything about it. She asked me about my immigration experience and two other questions. Then she said they were looking for someone with more paralegal experience, but she'd keep my resume on file. I couldn't ask any questions and the interview only lasted 5 minutes. Her tone was monotone and she spent most of the time looking at another screen. I'm glad I didn't get an offer since I wouldn't want to work at a place where that attitude might be shown to clients.
- Tell me about your immigration experience.
Legal Assistant
They really leaned into AI for this one. First, there was an AI chatbot screening that gave me a score out of 10. The human recruiter didn't even look at my answers, just the score. The recruiter then asked me a lot of the same questions the AI bot did. After that, the hiring team was supposed to interview me, but they ghosted me and never showed up. Apparently, the hiring team doesn't even check resumes, they just go off the recruiter and the AI score. It's a super weird and inefficient way to hire, and ghosting an interview is really unprofessional.
- Can you share an instance where you set a difficult goal for yourself and how you succeeded in meeting it?
- Tell me about a time when the work you did wasn't as good as it could have been. What led to that, and what did you take away from it?
Postdoctoral Research Associate
I had a typical screening call and then a video call. The initial screener was a mess and didn't tell me anything about pay or the 'hybrid environment' they listed. Then, the actual interviewer was late, pretty rude, seemed disengaged, and hadn't even looked at my application. Total waste of time. I also had to do a skills test where I had to, like, perfectly type out a random mix of letters and numbers, and also just send an email. It literally tested if I could find the send button. This is for a job needing a BA and 2+ years of research experience, which is pretty wild.
- Can you tell me about your knowledge of immigration law?
Recruiting Coordinator
First, you'll apply for the role. Then, a recruiter will review your resume and give you a call for an initial phone screen. After that, your resume will be submitted to the Hiring Manager for their review. If the Hiring Manager wants to interview you, the Recruiting Coordinator will call or email you to schedule the interview. You'll get an email confirmation for the interview. Expect to hear back with feedback within a week. For higher-level roles, there might be a secondary or final interview, but lower-level roles usually just have one on-site or video call interview. If they decide not to move forward, you'll get an automated email from our ATS system. If they decide to move forward, your Recruiter will call you to talk about the offer, compensation, and answer any questions.
