First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Bentley Systems.
Human Resources
The interviewer was distracted and multitasking, making it hard to keep their focus. I had to repeat myself a few times. It also took a while to get a response, and when I did, the feedback wasn't very clear, even after I asked for clarification.
- Can you describe your experience with executing a project?
Software Engineer
I applied for a C++ role but ended up interviewing for this position instead. The HR gave me some study materials that were completely different from what the interviewers actually asked. They asked about design patterns, and one senior architect didn't even recognize patterns I brought up, even after I spelled them out, saying they'd never heard of them – these were pretty common ones! They didn't touch on my resume, previous experience, or projects at all. It's strange how this company operates; their rejection email mentioned a TypeScript/React role, which isn't what I applied for or interviewed for. And asking for code reviews as a primary assessment method is odd, given how much code review practices vary across companies and languages. They told me to assume the code was compiling and running, so it wasn't about finding errors or debugging.
- Given a basic inheritance code, perform a code review assuming it compiles and runs.
- Can you describe the design patterns you have utilized?
Intern
The interview process is quite lengthy. Had 2 technical interviews, 1 HR & then technical with senior employee. Focus was my projects & the depth of knowledge of OOPS, SQL & my favourite programming language. They also tested my problem solving skills with 2 medium DSA problems based on Hashing, Precomputation & Graphs. Final round had questions from the language I chose for programming & my experiences so far in my BTech journey.
- Could you explain Exception Handling?
- Can you provide examples for the pillars of OOPS?
- How about SQL joins?
Manager
I was contacted on LinkedIn for a role that wasn't advertised yet. First, I spoke with the internal recruiter, and it went well. Then, I had an interview with the hiring manager, which also seemed good, and I was keen to join their team. They said they wanted to move me forward to meet with their manager, the Director in the US. The recruiter got in touch a week later to schedule a meeting with the Director. I confirmed a time, but on the day, no meeting was set up. I had to reach out an hour before the interview to check if it was still happening, and they replied that unfortunately, something came up and the Director couldn't make it. A few days later, the recruiter mentioned they had to 'officially' advertise the role for GDPR reasons and asked me to submit my CV through the job posting, assuring me I wouldn't have to go through the whole process again and that she'd let me know the Director's availability soon. (I probably should have backed out then, but I really liked the hiring manager, so I decided to give them the benefit of the doubt.) A week after that, I still hadn't heard back, so I tried contacting the recruiter, but got no response. Two weeks after that, and almost 2 months since my first interview with the recruiter, I received a generic rejection email regarding my application (the CV they asked me to submit for GDPR reasons). I get that things happen and mistakes can occur, but this was managed very poorly throughout. I hope Bentley learns from this and improves their practices for future candidates.
- What drives you to apply?
- Tell me about your previous work.
- What are you skilled in?
