& Process

Applied thru their career website. HR contacted me for a round 1 phone interview with the team members I would be working with. Interview was good with equal emphasis on questions about my technical expertise and them explaining to me what the job is all about. Got a call within 2 days for a round 2 on site interview with the team and the manager. Got an offer after 5 days. I thought the overall interview process was straight forward and easy.

My first interview was at my school's career center with an HR rep and a high-level finance person. The HR interview was pretty standard, but the finance one got more technical than I expected. They asked a lot about fixed income and risk analysis. After that, 12 of us MBA students were invited to SLC for the second round. We met at their HQ, had introductions, some lunch, and a short Q&A. Then, we were split into groups to analyze a case for about an hour while 3-4 Zions execs watched. That evening, there was a dinner/reception with management to socialize. The next morning, I had one-on-one interviews with 4 execs chosen from the pool of 12+ people who interviewed. I met with a sales rep, an HR person, and finance and operations people; they specifically mixed up the specialties. These interviews were more about 'fit' than technical skills. We finished by noon. Overall, it was pretty standard for MBA recruiting. I liked that they gave us a decision within a couple of weeks. One thing I didn't like was that they originally said they were looking to fill maybe 5-6 positions, but out of the 12 people I talked to, only one got an offer. I know for sure 2 people were hired, and maybe a third. So, out of 12, they might have made 4 offers and got 2-3 acceptances.

It was a brief and relaxed but still a formal interview. There was one formal phone interview, another in person but less formal interview with a panel, and a final less formal meeting with a more senior manager. The panel interview questions in the phone interview were lead in part by the thoughts and goals of the panel which consisted of potential peers. My particular interviews were not typical of Zions Bancorp but more of an outlier and reflected the nature of the position I was being interviewed for as being part of group that sets out to accomplish the same goal but by individuals with unique and varied abilities.
