Account Executive
I applied for the job and they reached out for a call to ask some basic qualifying questions, then invited me to a preliminary online interview. Luckily it was digital 'cause I didn't have transport at the time. It was HireVue, super easy, did it on my phone after using the practice questions. They liked it, and I got a call back that same evening for an in-person/final interview. The person who called me gave a quick company overview but talked way too fast and just kept saying 'awesome awesome' after my answers, which felt weird and impersonal, almost made me not want to continue lol. The in-person interview was really thorough. I wasn't familiar with a lot of the sales/marketing terms, so I wasn't totally sure what I was getting into, but I knew I needed sales experience. They gave me the full details on pay, how to advance, grow, and the day-to-day tasks, but it was phrased really well so it sounded way better than it actually is, which is why I didn't really grasp what the day actually involved, and I didn't know what questions to ask to clarify.
- Are you seeking full-time employment?
- Would the Tyson's Corner location be a convenient commute for you?
- What would be the initial impression of you if you were in a room full of strangers?
Account Executive
I had a pleasant one on one conversation with the CEO of the company, and he asked the standard interview questions that you have most likely prepared for. Next, I was asked to come back for a second round interview where they told me about the exact responsibilities that I would be in charge of as an employee.
- Can you describe yourself in three words?
Account Executive
So I had this first interview where they asked me normal stuff, nothing too hard. They said they'd call me the next day for a second round if they wanted me back. I got called back for a second round where they told me I'd be shadowing some people for a day. When I got there, I met a few people and they said we were gonna go meet clients. I thought it would be like a regular office job, you know? But nope, we got driven out to DC and ended up doing door-to-door sales for Verizon Fios in neighborhoods for like 6 hours. It was 90 degrees out, and they never told me to wear comfy shoes, so I was in stilettos sweating buckets in my new clothes. They totally tricked me into this, didn't even mention we'd be doing door-to-door sales. I wanted to bail as soon as I realized, but I was stuck since they drove me. The people I shadowed were good at sales, super nice, but they definitely misled me about the shadowing part. This ain't for everyone, especially not for me. Oh, and we didn't get back until 8pm for a 'closing interview'. If you hate sitting in an office, maybe this is your thing. But getting paid only commission with no base salary for what's basically labor work? Nah. Now I'm super careful about job descriptions, especially entry-level ones. Look out for phrases like 'a face to face approach with clients'.
- Can you explain the distinctions between paid media, owned media, and earned media?
