I applied for the Senior Product Designer role at Zapier and was excited to move forward to the first interview. I received multiple reminder emails and joined the scheduled video call on time, only to be informed that the interview was being cancelled - while I was already waiting in the meeting room. The reason given was that my location didn’t align with the role’s focus on North America, something that could have easily been checked much earlier in the process. Given Zapier’s strong messaging around being a fully remote, “work from anywhere” company, this felt incredibly contradictory and frustrating. I spent time preparing, rearranged my schedule, and was genuinely excited about the opportunity, so to have it cancelled at the last minute due to an avoidable oversight was disappointing and disheartening. Zapier seems to care deeply about candidate experience in theory, but in practice, this felt like a careless miss. I hope they tighten up internal checks and treat candidates’ time with more respect moving forward.

The application process was great. About a week after applying, I got an email saying review was taking longer because of a lot of applications. A few days later, a recruiter called to set up a screening. The screening was more technical than I thought, but the recruiter was nice and knew the role. She called back the same day to schedule the second round, a 60-minute behavioral interview. I heard back quickly again to set up the third round, a portfolio review. She even offered a 15-minute chat to help me prepare, giving feedback from the behavioral interview and what to expect. Her support was amazing. This is where it ended for me. I got a nice email with feedback, an invite to talk more, and a list of their partners recruiting. Job searching is hard, but it would be so much better if employers treated candidates like this. Thanks to the team!

The interview process was quite thorough, though I ended up withdrawing because I got a better offer. It started with a recruiter screen where they surprisingly went over my portfolio, which was unexpected. Then there was a job fit interview with the hiring manager focusing on teamwork and design process. After that, I was supposed to do a skills assessment with three designers, which involved a written assignment to create a deck from my portfolio. Finally, there was a leadership round with the Design Lead. It felt respectful, but not entirely positive due to the portfolio review in the initial call and needing to tentatively schedule things before confirmation.
