Behavioral Technical Presentation

The interview process started with an intro call with a recruiter, then a behavioral interview with a manager. After that, I had a homework assignment where I had to build an app using a framework of my choice. This was followed by a technical interview with two team members who gave feedback on my assignment. The final interview was with a director. The process concluded with background and reference checks, and a meeting with my future team. Overall, it was a really positive experience with great team members who represented the company culture well. However, after receiving a verbal offer, things went downhill. I waited an extra two weeks for updates, and after a lot of back and forth with the recruiter, the role couldn't get approved. It's a shame because I really liked the company, but they did waste my time, so it's hard to say it was a positive experience in the end.

So first there was this super long application questionnaire, like pages of text asking about my dev experience, no resume needed. It took them 3 weeks after I applied to even have a recruiter reach out to set up a phone screen. Then I had to wait another 4 weeks for the actual phone screen. It was a 30 min call with a recruiter, pretty standard stuff like company history, my background, the job details, and a few simple react/js questions. The next week, the recruiter set up a video call with the hiring manager. They seemed kinda checked out, like reading a script. Lots of 'tell me about a time when' type questions focusing on soft skills. After that, another week passed and the recruiter sent me a link for a coding test. I got a GitHub repo with a markdown file explaining setup. Once I was ready, I clicked a button to get the project spec and the 4-hour timer started. The task was to build a simple GitHub gist viewer in React. First part was making a module to fetch gists by user or ID from the API. Second part was building the React app to use that module to let users search for a user, see their gists, view a gist's files, and mark files as favorites. A week after I finished the code test, I got a generic email saying they weren't moving forward and wouldn't give any feedback.

The interview experience started with a phone screen, then a 1 hour interview with the hiring manager. After that, there was a 2.5 hour take-home coding test. This was followed by a 1 hour interview to go over the code test and other frontend topics. Then, there was a 1 hour interview with 2 peers from different departments. The final round was a 1 hour interview with a leadership member. The process was efficient and scheduling was straightforward. It might seem intimidating if you haven't interviewed in a while, but everyone was really nice and supportive, and the questions and expectations were totally reasonable. I felt comfortable being myself and being open about my experience.
