Behavioral Technical Case Presentation

I went through an interview process for an Engineering Manager role at Zapier that took about a month and was pretty great. It started with a 30-min screening call with a recruiter, where I just talked about my experience and what I'm looking for. Then, I had a 1-hour job fit interview with a Senior Engineering Manager, focusing on my management style and values. After that, it was a 1-hour manager skills interview with two other Engineering Managers, which was more about situational questions on hiring, onboarding, growth, performance, and results. A big part was a 1.5-hour architectural skills interview with an Engineering Manager and a Director. Before that, I had 5 days to do a take-home assessment where I created a presentation about a past project, which took me 3 days. The interview itself had about 25 mins for my presentation, followed by Q&A. The final stage was a 1.5-hour interview with the VP of Engineering, to understand the org structure and make my case. I got a verbal offer the next day and even had the chance to chat with other executives to help me decide. I really liked the whole process and accepted the offer.

Behavioral Presentation

A recruiter reached out, and they seemed really knowledgeable. Then I had the standard hiring manager interview. After that, I met with two managers and had to put together a presentation. They approved the presentation, but then I got a generic rejection email from a no-reply address after meeting with those two managers. The issue was that the two managers were totally disengaged, just reading from a script and not reacting to my answers at all. After investing hours in interviews and take-home assignments, I really expect a reason for rejection, even a one-sentence one would be common courtesy.

The interview process included a call with a recruiter, then the hiring manager, followed by another deep dive into my resume. The recruiter knew a lot about the different teams and goals at Zapier. I was surprised to learn that Zapier doesn't offer RSUs except for Director level and above, which makes it less interesting. One good thing is that you can be remote.
