First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Zales Jewelers.
Manager
It was a three-interview process, with one in-person meeting and two phone calls. All three interviews covered similar ground. I was asked about how I would approach things differently from my current boss and the previous manager. They also looked at my past sales numbers as a jewelry consultant and asked about my strategy for helping team members achieve success in important metrics.
- Could you share details about your prior sales experience?
- What changes would you implement compared to your boss?
- Given your track record as a jewelry consultant, what's your approach to developing team members to excel in key performance indicators?
Assistant Manager
I arrived early for my interview and introduced myself to the manager. She asked me to sit down and said she'd be with me shortly. After a 10-minute wait, she returned and asked one question: 'Tell me about yourself.' We then discussed family, and she shared information about hers. I felt comfortable during this part. She had to leave for about 10 minutes to assist customers because her colleague was on lunch break. When she returned, she informed me that I needed to complete an online application, which would be sent to the store, and then she would follow up with me.
- Can you introduce yourself?
Infrastructure Manager
My resume went to the CIO who then gave it to HR to schedule an interview. The team I would be managing interviewed me first, then the hiring manager joined and the team left. We spoke for about 45 minutes about the role and my background. The hiring manager mentioned I was qualified for both management roles he had open and he just needed to find the other candidate. He said he'd let me know the following week. HR mentioned he needed to coordinate with the hiring manager to get the interview feedback. This back-and-forth between HR and the hiring manager went on for a month without resolution. Eventually, HR informed me that after speaking with the hiring manager, they concluded there were no roles I was qualified for. It was quite strange. My suspicion is they discovered my age, being over 60. No further communication was received.
- How would you deal with a defiant employee who doesn't accept your authority as their manager?
