First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Your Part-Time Controller, LLC.
Accountant
The process included a good intro to the company. They asked why I want to work with YPTC. There was an excel spreadsheet test, which was friendly. It focused on the position and was a relatively simple multiple choice test on basic not-for-profit accounting.
- Can you tell me about your understanding of basic accounting principles for not-for-profit organizations?
- What are your skills in using Excel for creating spreadsheets, formatting data, and working with it?
- Explain your proficiency in Excel for spreadsheet creation and data manipulation.
Staff Accountant
I went through the initial screening which had a basic debit and credit assessment. I was surprised to be tested on an interview, I only get anxiety during tests. Otherwise, I am a confident person and can dive into things. The screening interviewer was pleasant. I then moved on to the 1st interview. The 1st interviewer was nice. I was asked general questions about my experience and was also given an excel assessment... another test... anxiety hit and my mind blanked on three tabs of the spreadsheets. Once the interview was done, I went back in to open the excel and finished the tabs I blanked on in 30 seconds. Wanted to kick myself in the butt, but oh well. I was sent an email 2 days later saying I was not a fit. I don't care for their process. I understand that they need people with competent experience (which I do have), but in real life at a job, you are not tested with no ability to research to ensure your accuracy. If you get bad testing anxiety, like I do, it may not be a great experience for you. Also, I was applying for the staff accountant position, which generally seemed to be basic bookkeeping duties and possibly taking on some of the controller/management tasks if needed. No big deal, but know I am more than capable of doing this. I am a little rusty on some of the excel points they went over, but I explained it would not take very long for me to pick it back up again. Just disappointing that it seems like they base it on testing instead of the persons potential.
- What working papers do you typically use in your accounting practice?
- Can you tell me if you are responsible for creating depreciation schedules?
- Are you capable of constructing a depreciation schedule using Microsoft Excel?
Accountant
They are really nice and market their company well at first. The interview process is friendly, but don't be fooled. It seemed genuine, but it was actually a way for them to find weaknesses. They are cutthroat; any weakness you have means you won't get picked. They test you on Excel (formatting, pivot tables, vlookups) and accounting (debits and credits). It felt less like an interview and more like a series of tests to see if you fit their organization and to eliminate candidates. They don't care about you or the value you bring. It's a 'friendly', manipulative process disguised as 3-4 interviews to see if you fit. They hype you up with friendliness and marketing, but you'll end up doing basic bookkeeping with not much in-depth training, according to the interviewer. It's not a path for career growth. The company was sold, has a new CEO, and there's likely more pressure for money grabs. So, do your research. I'm glad I wasn't picked. I didn't get a genuine feeling through the interviews; it felt methodical and manipulative to me. It might be different for others; this is just my experience and perspective. God Bless!
