First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at York University.
Research Assistant
The process was pretty detailed, especially for recruiting grad students. They asked a lot of questions about you and your resume, focusing on your past educational and leadership experience. Make sure you have detailed examples ready for all your previous roles and educational expertise.
- What makes you want to pursue graduate studies?
Research Assistant
The interview process involved a skills test to assess data entry abilities, typing speed, and accuracy. This was followed by an in-person interview where we discussed academic interests, future academic goals, previous research experience, and specific research questions related to quantitative research. It's worth noting that what was presented about the work environment and the job itself didn't quite match the reality once I started working.
- Why are you interested in quantitative research?
- What are your academic interests?
- What are your academic future goals?
Research Assistant
You can apply through the university portal, department/lab websites, or by reaching out directly/networking with professors. They'll screen your CV, cover letter, transcripts, and research fit. They will dive deep into your background and relevant skills/experience. Be ready to talk about why you're interested in their specific research (this is super important!). Expect technical questions about the role's duties, like methods, software, or equipment. They'll also ask situational/behavioral questions about problem-solving, teamwork, and time management. Make sure you have questions for them about the role, lab, and research.
- Is your interest and availability confirmed?
- Can you briefly discuss your background and relevant skills from your application?
- Can you provide more details about the project and the RA role's specific duties?
