It was one of the worst interview experiences I've had. The group product manager on the panel was really disrespectful and didn't even look at the camera, which made me feel like he had biases against my background. He yelled at me when I answered his question about handling conflicts, saying my answer wasn't direct enough. This really showed me a lot about the company culture and made me realize I would never want to work for a team or company that treats interviewees that way.

I applied through the university recruiter at a careers event. First, there were two in-person interviews at the university with designers where I presented my portfolio. They asked about my design decisions and thought process. A week later, I got a design challenge from the recruiter. A few days after submitting it, the recruiter set up a video call with a designer to go over my challenge. If you pass the design challenge, you get invited for an on-site interview. There, you give a portfolio and design challenge presentation to designers who ask about your design decisions and what-if scenarios. The questions focused on designer intuition and thought process, not much on user research or the design process. Afterwards, I talked to a senior manager/director who asked me to critique a website and answer questions about it. Then, there was a 20-30 minute white-boarding exercise. About 1-2 weeks later, the recruiter told me they weren't moving forward.

I had a phone screen where the recruiter asked about my past work, my background, and my interest in Yelp. This was followed by a 30-minute portfolio presentation via video call with two designers. The presentation setup was a bit unclear, and video calls can feel impersonal. I had to ask for clarification on some questions, which made the presentation run long. The interviewers didn't seem very engaged or keen on convincing me about the role. Afterward, I got a standard rejection email without any feedback. I heard the next stage involves a design presentation, so I'm somewhat relieved I didn't move forward. This whole experience felt quite impersonal.
