Technical Coding

So I submitted my resume after a recruiter came to my school. Then I had a pretty easy coding challenge. After that, I had a 60-minute phone screen where they asked me some technical questions about my project, and I was a bit confused about what they were asking. Next, I did a coding exercise on coderpad about string permutations. Scheduling was really slow and annoying, and the interviewer seemed unenthusiastic about Yelp, saying it was just the first place that hired them.

Technical Coding

It started with a quick phone screen with HR, then a short coding challenge. After that, there was a 45-minute Skype technical interview with an engineer. Then, two more 45-minute Skype technical interviews back-to-back with two other engineers. The recruiter was super quick to get back to me and answer any questions I had. The whole process was pretty easy and I had a good experience. The Skype interviews had some decent questions, though I'm not sure the coding challenge (especially the 12 random questions) was that helpful.

Confirmed questions6 questions
  • For the coding challenge, there were about a dozen miscellaneous CS questions like asking what data structure you'd use for binary search: a sorted array or a linked list, and what the base-10 value of the largest 32-bit unsigned integer is.
  • This was followed by being asked to sort a list of restaurant ID-rating pairs by rating.
  • For the first round, the task was to implement a mini 'search engine,' basically associating basic user queries with restaurants that matched the query in their name or description.

Coding

I first met the recruiters at a career fair and handed them my resume. After a few months, they reached out to set up an interview. The interview itself was conducted over Skype, and I was asked to write code in an online editor. The interviewer was really nice and friendly. They started by asking me about a project I had worked on, and then they gave me a coding question to solve.
