First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Yahoo Japan.
Software Engineer
I applied and heard back from the hiring manager for a quick phone call just 4 days later. Then, the recruiter took about three weeks to figure out my visa situation with Yahoo's immigration folks. After that, I had a full day of six interviews lined up with different people from frontend, design, engineering, and product teams. Everyone seemed pretty cool, and the vibe was really open and generally nice. The Flickr offices are in a neat building downtown in the financial district. Oh, and everything is purple.
- Can you write a regular expression that matches telephone numbers?
- Given a very large MySQL table, what's an efficient method for selecting 20 random rows?
- How can you make a file executable using chmod if the chmod command itself isn't executable?
Software Development Engineer
It was almost three interviews for new grads. The first was a potential interview, the second was a pro interview, and the last was an HR interview. All had easy questions. But the biggest problem was that the interviewer might not be from the department you want to join. For instance, if you selected the data science department, the HR might be from infra and talk about infra for 30 minutes, wasting all the time.
- Can you tell me why you chose Yahoo?
- What are your career aspirations at Yahoo Japan?
- To what extent are you familiar with the infrastructure at Yahoo?
Software Engineer Intern
The first part was to build a table reservation system. The second part was a math question about combination but we had to handle large numbers. Since I was using C++, I had to use the boost library.
- Could you build a table reservation system?
- How would you solve a math problem involving combinations with large numbers, potentially using C++ and the boost library?
