First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at XL Construction.
Project Engineer
The interview process was super relaxed. They seemed more interested in my enthusiasm for the work than my actual skills or knowledge. Since it's an intern position, I guess they really value a desire to learn and a genuine passion for the job over your current skill set. Everyone at XL Construction was incredibly nice, and I had a great time during the interview process.
- Why are you interested in this particular role?
Admin Assistant
The interview process went pretty well, and everyone I met was really nice. The questions asked felt pretty standard for this type of role. I had two separate interview sessions, meeting with four different people in total. The whole process took about a week. However, when Michelle Brewster, the recruiter, called me back to give me feedback, she was incredibly rude and unprofessional, more so than anyone I've encountered before. Instead of a simple, generic email saying I didn't get the job, she insisted I call her. Then, she told me I wasn't a good fit because I seemed to want a higher position and that if I took the current offer, I'd likely quit or look for other opportunities because I wouldn't be promoted immediately, or I'd complain about the job. I was completely taken aback by her rudeness and comments. Honestly, she showed no work ethics in my opinion.
- Regarding my 5 year goal, what was it?
- What challenges have you faced in your job?
IT Director
It started with a phone chat with HR, then an in-person meeting with the Hiring Manager (who is the CFO). Later, I had conversations with three important business folks: the CEO, the HR Director, and the Technology Operations Manager. Each of these talks lasted about 30-60 minutes. The interviews felt pretty natural, a mix of talking and some unexpected questions. The leaders I met were really approachable, genuine, and professional. It seemed like a good balance of talking and listening. I sent thank you notes a few days later, and then followed up again after a couple of weeks. Two more follow-ups, spaced out over a few weeks, led to the news that they went with another candidate. Even though I didn't get the job, it was a good experience, and I was really impressed with the company, its leaders, and XL's culture. They're serious about hiring because they want to build on their positive culture, and they vet candidates thoroughly. I spoke with the CEO for more than an hour (we only stopped because another meeting was starting in our conference room), which showed me he really cares. From what I gathered about XL Construction, if you have the opportunity to join them, I'd recommend it.
- Can you describe a past project you worked on and the key takeaways? If you could go back, what would you do differently?
Accounts Payable Specialist
I applied on their website and was immediately scheduled for an in-person interview. They were urgently looking for someone to replace. I had one 30 minute phone screening with the recruiter and two in-person interviews within the two weeks. I spent roughly 5 hours in total for all three interviews. I found it odd since I had initially thought it would only be solely be one in-person interview since I met my direct hiring manager. But I guess, she wanted me to go through with a few more upper managements to screen to see how I was. All interviews, I received positive feedbacks. I really liked the transparency everyone including the recruiter regarding the hiring process. After my second in-person interview, I felt confident that I got the job - but sadly I was informed that the hiring manager decided to add a few more candidates to the position. The third week, I received a call that I did not get the offer and they had moved forward with the last minute candidate. To me, everyone was transparent except for the hiring manager. I felt the hiring manager was probably not content with me from the very beginning. I wished she would at the very least clarify a little more to the recruiter what she was looking for, not in terms as work ethic, if you know what I mean. Based off of what everyone had mentioned, I was way over qualified and understood what they were looking for. I tried to understand in their situation and tried my best to be positive.
