Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at X-Team.
Senior Software Engineer
First, a recruiter call with behavioral questions to assess background and senior-level behavior. Then, a technical assessment with medium-level questions and answers only. It's more of a conversation with another programmer to understand your foundation. Finally, an interview with the client, which depends on whether the client requests it. Sometimes it's just a conversation, sometimes it's technical. Usually, it's just conversations.
- Tell me about a time you proactively solved a problem.
- What stack would you prefer right now and why? What's the difference between the frameworks?
- Explain closure to me.
Software Engineer
A recruiter reached out, and after some email exchanges, I was asked to record video answers to a set of questions covering personal and technical aspects. The answers were submitted via a provided link, with a 1-minute time limit per question. The recruiter confirmed receipt of the recordings but then went completely silent, not responding to follow-up emails about their interest. While the initial contact was good, the lack of communication afterward was unprofessional, making the overall experience negative. A simple rejection would have been appreciated.
- Can you explain the functionality of React's setState API?
- What are the distinctions between function components using React hooks versus traditional class-based components?
Software Engineer
It was a pretty thorough process, and they really seemed to value actual passion for coding and stuff like open source work more than those tricky programming puzzles. I was glad they didn't hit me with those questions that don't really show how you'd handle real projects, communicate, or work in a team. They seemed to care a lot about honest communication and my open source history. It looked like lots of folks there have side projects they're into, not just work stuff.
- Given a codebase, fix any issues and discuss the changes.
- Demonstrate your problem-solving approach through programming challenges.
- Tell us about your past work experience.
