Technical Coding Behavioral

The interview involved two one-hour technical interviews focusing on problem-solving through coding and a holistic view of QA, including data structures. Following this, there were two one-hour interviews with the company founders. I felt good about the technical part since I got to the founder interviews, but then it got weird. They really dug into my whole background. The first founder kept talking about diversity, and I suspect my potential disability was why I didn't get an offer. I didn't get to meet the second founder. The founder seemed ableist, which frankly, the whole interview process felt like. No explanation was given for passing on me.

I applied online and then had a phone screen. After that, I scheduled my first round which had 2 interviews. The first interview was all about technical and strategy knowledge and also checking for culture fit. The second round of interviews involved 2 principals and I had to present work from previous projects and talk through many details about past work. They kept me really informed about how things were going and what the next steps were. X by 2 really cares about communication and being open about the whole process.

The whole process from application to offer took about 3 weeks, which was during the holidays. I had a quick chat with a recruiter first, then went through five 1-hour remote interviews. These were with other senior devs, architects, and even the president. One junior dev was also sitting in on one of the interviews. The interviews felt pretty back-and-forth, like a conversation, and they were upfront about the challenges of interviewing senior folks. The president even stayed an extra 30 minutes to answer my questions. It was interesting because I got different answers from different people when I asked questions, which made me feel like they were being honest. There was only one coding question, the rest were more about the bigger picture stuff senior engineers deal with.

So I had a quick chat with the recruiter first, then got set up for two interviews. After finishing those, they wanted me to come back for two more. The whole thing, from when I applied to when they gave me the offer, took about a month. It was all good, the scheduling was great, they kept me updated, and the interviewers were good at talking and answering stuff.
