& Process

We started with a zoom call with the head Engineering lead. They asked about my background and tested my technical skills. Then, a few weeks later, I went in for an on-site. This involved meeting with several technical folks who threw some tough technical problems at me, and I had to solve them right there. The whole thing took over 4 hours and wrapped up at HR.

They began with something called the "Berke assessment", which I thought was a technical assessment. But it turned out to be mostly nonsense, like a typing test and some weird word synonym exercises (for context, I scored very high on the language sections of the SAT and GRE, and I hadn't even heard of most of those words). After that, they sent me a coding test using what I think was "codebyte". It had a really poor interface and only allowed C++, Typescript, Javascript, or Java, which they hadn't mentioned beforehand and didn't seem relevant to the job. I only finished one question, a simple recursion problem that I solved in under a minute. However, there were very strange output formatting requirements that were poorly explained and hard to figure out, taking me about 10-15 minutes just to understand how to format the output. I'm not sure what the point of that was besides checking if a candidate can look up a library function. Combined with the "Berke Assessment", I was so frustrated that I asked to withdraw my application. I don't know what happened with their process after that.

The interview process was really quick and professional. It started with a phone call that lasted about 45 minutes. Then, there was a personal interview day which was about 5 hours long and included 8 meetings plus lunch. Finally, there was another phone interview, also around 45 minutes. It was all in German and English, and the communication was super fast and professional, making me feel really valued. They were really clear and answered all my questions perfectly. I was actually pretty surprised by how good the whole thing was. The salary they offered was also really competitive for an entry level role.

The phone interview with the hiring manager was quite technical, with a few HR-type questions mixed in. Following that, there was an online aptitude/personality test involving vocabulary and logic puzzles, which was kind of fun. The full-day on-site interview began with a short presentation (around 25 minutes). Some interviewers asked more technical questions than others. Lunch and dinner were hosted by scientists and they were very friendly.
