It began with a call from HR. It was mainly a background check, asking about my work history, experience, and why I wanted the job. It wasn't super technical, mostly just confirming my resume info, when I could start, and what salary I was looking for.

Before the interview, I got a home assignment from an HR person. It was meant to help me and Wix get to know each other better. It had two parts: first, pick six websites (three I really liked with reasons, and three I liked but not as much) and second, create a website about myself. I had five days for this. The HR person called the day after I sent it in to schedule a meeting with the head of PMM at Wix. The interview itself went pretty well, I thought, and the interviewer was very nice. We talked a lot about my background and how it fit with what Wix does. I got the feeling they were looking for more product marketing experience, and since mine leaned more towards branding and creative stuff, I didn't get an offer.

The interview process included an initial chat with HR, followed by a "packaging yourself" take-home assignment. Then there was an in-person interview with two people from the product marketing team. After that, I got a second take-home assignment. In the end, they told me they weren't moving forward with my application. The first assignment was time-consuming, but they seemed pleased with it, and I was invited for an interview which I felt went well. Things got tricky when they brought up the second assignment. It had really demanding requirements: create a full marketing plan for one of their products, a landing page, and an intro email. In my experience, making a detailed marketing plan takes a lot of time and shouldn't be a take-home test. It's a full-time job task. Still, I did the assignment to be cooperative and learn about their products, putting in a lot of extra effort. But HR contacted me saying they wouldn't proceed after reviewing it. The feedback was that I didn't consider the competition, and some other things that weren't relevant, like a blog post. A competitive analysis takes time and product knowledge, but they didn't ask for it in the assignment. Their assignment focused on specific things, and competition wasn't mentioned. I could have added more, but I didn't want to give them a reason to say I didn't follow instructions or wasn't brief enough. I followed their instructions precisely. While I accept there might be better candidates, I can't accept unfair treatment and ridiculous demands. I believe good workplaces trust candidates, not try to trick them. They focused on what I didn't do, even though they never asked for it. So, for anyone interviewing for this role and getting this assignment, definitely look into competitors! And consider if it's worth joining a team that gives unreasonable requirements during the hiring process. My advice to the company is to be more honest and open, tell candidates exactly what's expected, and make assignments more reasonable, considering people have full-time jobs and families.
